Chapter 2
The drive from the FRL to Pine Ridge Township took three and a half hours.
On the highway, I scrolled further up through the alumni chat.
Amber had been teasing this wedding for a month, dropping countdowns, dress fittings, and close-ups of her diamond ring.
Every single post was met with shameless flattery.
[Oh my god, how many carats is that? It must have cost a fortune.]
[Amber is so lucky. Marrying into that kind of wealth is a dream.]
[How did you guys meet? Give us the details!]
Amber’s replies always followed the same script.
[It was fate. He chased me for months.]
[He told me he couldn’t even breathe the first time he saw me.]
She had also shared a series of photos with Pierce.
At high-end bistro.
On luxury yachts.
And one photo showed the sofa in Pierce’s study.
That study was inside our house at Emerald Crest Estates, the place we called home.
She was sitting on my sofa, legs crossed, wearing a smug smile.
In the bottom right corner of the frame, hanging on the wall, was a Hudson River School oil painting.
That painting was my late father’s prized possession, and I had personally hung it there when we moved in.

The navigation voice chimed, indicating forty minutes left on the drive.
The phone buzzed against the passenger seat.
Another text from Pierce.
[The weather is dropping lately. Is it cold over there? I had a couple of winter coats shipped to your lab, make

sure to pick them up.)
I didn’t reply.
I flipped the phone face down onto the seat.
During the entire three-and-a-half-hour drive, one specific memory kept looping in my mind.
Three years ago, Pierce stood in front of me
He said a marriage between our families would keep his corporate rivals from moving against him.
He claimed that if he could leverage the Coates family’s influence, he could secure his position as the
wealthiest man in Veridia.
He promised he would treat me right.
I agreed.
It wasn’t because of his promises, but because Director Harrison told me this strategic alliance would benefit the agency’s long-term interests.
So I consented.
Pierce used my background to paralyze his competition, and the aggressive expansion of Summit Group faced no further hurdles.
He reached the absolute top of the corporate ladder.
Yet, I couldn’t even make my identity public. My entire existence was classified.
To the outside world, no one knew Pierce Mason was married.
Let alone to whom.
I suppose that was exactly why Amber felt safe enough to throw this entire wedding.
The GPS voice finally spoke. “You have arrived at your destination.”
I parked the car and opened the door.
