Chapter 3

The lane leading to Amber’s home was packed solid.

Red balloons, floral arrangements, and confetti cannons lined the entire street.

Before I could even get close, my phone buzzed again.

Inside the group chat, someone had dropped a video.

In the frame, Amber was standing at the entrance of the house, exchanging pleasantries with a crowd.

Live comments from our former classmates scrolled rapidly across the top of the video.

[Amber looks stunning today!]

[Not even a fairy could compete with her!]

[Did you guys see the groom’s setup? Eight black limousines. The whole township is out here gawking.]

I ignored the messages and kept walking.

Just as I turned the corner of the lane, I nearly collided with someone.

“Eleanor?”

The girl paused, then grinned.

Auto-added to the Library

It was Stacy. She’d been Amber’s sidekick in high school, the type who was always the first to start trouble.

She looked me up and down. “You actually showed up?”

“I’m here.”

There was an unreadable glint in Stacy’s smile.

“Well, you’d better prepare yourself.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

୮

She didn’t answer. Instead, she shouted toward the end of the lane, “Amber! Guess who just arrived?”

I followed her toward the entrance, and the first thing that caught my eye was a massive, elegant floral welcome sign by the entrance.

“Celebrating the Union of Pierce Mason and Amber Howard.”

A crowd had gathered at the base of the grand staircase, a sea of silk dresses and designer heels clicking against the red carpet.

They were all our former classmates.

Amber stood dead center. Her blusher hadn’t been lowered yet, and the train of her white gown stretched

out for nearly six feet.

She was smiling.

It was a practiced, perfect smile, her lips curled at the exact right angle, framed by the crowd of admirers.

I recognized the faces instantly.

Cara, who used to sit behind me and chat with me all the time.

Cristin, who had once begged to borrow my full set of study notes.

And Noah, who sat by the window and passed notes with me in class for three whole years.

They were all gathered around Amber, so focused on her that nobody noticed me yet.

“Amber, just how rich is your husband? The rumors in the township are insane.”

“Seriously! And those wedding cars-even the license plates look like nothing a normal person could get.”

Stacy cut in, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. “Pierce’s company handles projects worth hundreds of millions. Don’t bother asking. It just makes us look provincial.”

Amber tapped Stacy’s hand gently with a smile. “Don’t say that. We’re all old friends.”

Her tone was slow and measured, each word laced with just the right amount of condescension.

That kind of generosity felt a lot like charity.

I stood quietly behind the crowd, waiting for her to finish.

Stacy spoke again, her voice spiking in volume: “Amber, guess who’s here?”

Amber turned around.

Her gaze swept over a few shoulders and locked directly onto mine.

She let out a small laugh.

“Eleanor, you actually came?”

Every head in the group swiveled toward me.

“Oh, look who it is. Eleanor.”

Cara spoke first, drawing out the syllables as she scanned my outfit from head to toe.

“Ten years later, and this is what you show up in?”

I was wearing the Carhartt utility jacket I’d grabbed on my way out, paired with black pants and sneakers.

Against a backdrop of sequined gowns and high heels, I stuck out like a sore thumb.

“I was in a rush. Didn’t have time to change.”

“In a rush?” Cristin tilted her head. “What kind of job do you have that keeps you this busy?”

Stacy jumped in before I could speak. “Oh, she works at some place that’s so obscure it doesn’t even have a name. Probably too busy to even open a wedding invitation.”

They exchanged knowing glances and shared a smug laugh.

Noah scoffed. “Sounds like a pyramid scheme to me. All that secrecy.”

“Maybe not a scheme,” Stacy shrugged. “Just some low-rent shop on the corner. I get it-she’s probably

embarrassed to talk about it.”

I stayed silent.

Amber walked over, grabbed my hand, and put on a show of sisterly affection.

“Stop picking on Eleanor. I’m just happy she could make it.

As she spoke, she tried to pull me into the center of the group.

“Since you’re here, why don’t you catch us up? What have you been up to all these years? You haven’t posted a single update.”
