Chapter 25
Amber disappeared for a full week.
No social media updates. Nothing.
Stacy seemed to have evaporated into thin air, even locking her profile down to three-day visibility.
I thought it was finally over.
But Beatrice showed up.
She didn’t go through Pierce, nor any middleman.
She walked straight to the security gate of the research lab and handed in a business card.
On the back, she had written one line: [Please let Eleanor Coates come out to see me. I will wait as long as it
takes.]
When I walked down, Beatrice was standing under a sycamore tree outside the gate.
She was wearing a charcoal coat, no makeup, and her hair had gone significantly grayer than the last time
we met.
She took two steps toward me when she saw me, then stopped.
“Eleanor.”
She called me “Eleanor”, not “Eleanor Coates”.
“Yeah?”
“I came here to apologize.”
She unzipped her bag and pulled out a red velvet pouch.
She opened it to reveal a jade ring.
The quality was stunning-a deep, translucent green.
“This isn’t your mother’s. Hers was one-of-a-kind. Nothing can replace that.”
She held the pouch out with both hands.
୮
“This belonged to my mother-in-law. I wore it for thirty years. It’s yours now. Consider it my restitution
for Amber.”
I looked at the ring in her hands.

“I don’t want it.”
Beatrice’s hands hung in the air.
“Eleanor, I know I’ve made terrible mistakes. I shouldn’t have listened to Amber’s one-sided story and
judged you. And I definitely shouldn’t have forced you to sign those divorce papers in front of everyone at the gala.”
“Keep the ring if you wish, that’s your right. But you have to let me finish what I came to say.’
I didn’t cut her off.
“Pierce has never had a mind of his own. His father died young, and I raised him alone. As his business grew, so did the number of people hovering around him. Amber was the type who knew exactly how to make a man
feel needed.”
“I used to think she was wonderful. Polite, sweet, proactive. If Pierce couldn’t take me to a dinner, she would. If he forgot my birthday, she remembered.”
“I thought she genuinely cared about our family.”
“I only found out after reading those chat logs that she had an agenda from day one.”
“I hate that she lied to me. But I hate how foolish I was even more.’
She tucked the velvet pouch back into her bag.
“That’s my apology. If you don’t want to forgive me, I understand. But there’s something you need to
know.”
“What is it?”
“Amber has been reaching out to some of my former friends in the charity circuit, trying to get them to put in a good word. She wants back in.”
“Back in?”
“Back into Pierce’s life. She’s been telling them that if Pierce just gives her one more chance, she’ll agree to any terms.”
“What did they say?”
“Nobody wants to touch her.”
Beatrice paused.
“But one person agreed to pass the message along. A woman named Ross, a deputy manager in Pierce’s HR department. She’s an old college friend of Amber’s. I looked into it, she was hired on Amber’s

recommendation.”
“Amber still has a mole inside Summit Group?”
“It seems so. I had Pierce look into it. This deputy manager has been pulling internal files lately-behavior
that makes no sense.”
I was silent for a few seconds.
“Thank you for telling me.”
Beatrice nodded.
She turned to leave.
She stopped after two steps.
“Eleanor. Pierce is… he’s flawed, I know. But he’s sincere about you. If you don’t believe him, just watch.”
She didn’t wait for my response.
Her coat fluttered in the wind as she got into her car and drove away.
