Chapter 81
I cupped the fragments in my palm and stood up.
My hand was a mess, blood mixed with grit caked across my skin.
From within the crowd, a voice suddenly piped up.
“Hold on.”
It was Amber’s uncle by marriage, the man in the grey jacket who’d been circling the car.
He pushed through the onlookers, took one look at the shards on the ground, and then at my bloodied hand.
“Are you people insane? Is there some kind of misunderstanding here?”
Stacy waved him off, annoyed. “Stay out of this, will you? Who told you it was a misunderstanding?”
The man ignored Stacy and spoke to Amber. “Amber, I’m saying it again. That isn’t a private vehicle. I served in the military. I’ve seen those plates. Civilians don’t have access to them.”
Amber’s eyes narrowed for a split second.
“Uncle, you saw the photos. Pierce drives that car. I have proof.”
The man tried to interject again.
Amber turned to the old classmates, her voice rising half an octave.
“Everyone, Uncle has been out of the service for years. He doesn’t know the difference between car models anymore. Don’t let him mislead you.”
Cara chimed in immediately. “Exactly! Amber already showed us the photos. You think those are fake?”
The man was pushed to the back of the crowd. He opened his mouth, caught my eye, and ultimately shook
his head, giving up.
The only person who might have stood up for me had been silenced.
Amber turned her attention back to me.

“Eleanor, today is my big day. You came here to cause a scene, and you’ve got absolutely no proot. Is this really the hill you want to die on?”
“I’ll give you one more chance. Get on your knees right now. Apologize in front of everyone. Beg for my forgiveness.”
“I might consider not making this a bigger problem for you.’

Esperó toda la noche con una cena especial. Élnunca llegò.
She leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper against my ear.
“If you don’t, I promise, once these photos and videos hit the internet, you’ll never be able to show your face
in public again.”
I stared at her face.
We were less than a fist’s distance apart.
“Are you threatening me?”
“It’s not a threat. It’s reality.” Amber stood up straight. “You’re alone. You’ve got no money, no power, and no connections. How do you plan to fight the wife of a billionaire?”
I carefully slid the fragments into my pocket.
I wiped the blood from my hand.
“You want an apology?”
Amber tipped her chin up, looking smug.
“Yes.”
“Not happening.”
The smile on Amber’s face froze.
Stacy lunged, grabbing me by the back of my collar. “Still got a big mouth? Want to see how long you can stay on your knees?”
Stacy shoved me hard.
I lost my footing, and my knees slammed into the concrete again.
“There. That’s more like it.” Stacy stood over me, arms crossed, looking down.
“I didn’t kneel.” I pushed myself up off the ground.
Stacy reached out to shove me again.
This time, a few of the male classmates circled around.
Noah blocked my path. He wasn’t stopping them, he was boxing me in.
“Just give it up, Eleanor. Just apologize. Let everyone off the hook.”
“You’re already the mistress, what’s the big deal about kneeling?”

la poche con una cena especial. Él nunca llegó.
“Right. Have you no shame left?”
Cara added from the back, “Back in high school, you played the holier-than-thou act, ignoring everyone. Ten years later, look at you, involved in all this disgusting trash.”
Cristin shook her head. “The guys who wrote you love letters back then would be nauseous if they knew
what you were doing now.”
“That’s enough.” My voice wasn’t loud, but every word cut through the air.
“I’ll say it one last time. I am not a mistress. Every single thing you’re doing today will have consequences.”
