Chapter 7
The phone was totaled. The car was wrecked.
I bent down to pick up the phone, but the screen stayed pitch black. Nothing happened when I pressed the
buttons.
I couldn’t reach Director Harrison anymore.
Amber climbed out of the car, dusting off her gown as if it were coated in invisible dirt.
Her gaze toward me had changed.
It wasn’t just rage anymore. It was scrutiny.
“Huh.” She stepped closer, reaching out to flick my collar.
“What is that around your neck?”
I instinctively looked down.
The collar of my utility jacket had opened, revealing a hint of a delicate silver chain.
The piece attached to it had been pressed against my skin for twelve years.
“Take your hand off me,” I retreated half a step.
Amber arched her eyebrows.
“So defensive?”
She lunged forward, hooked a finger around the chain, and yanked.
The chain snapped taut, pulling the small jade ring out from under my shirt.
It was emerald green, the size of a finger ring, with a natural white vein running across the surface like a
crescent moon.
It was the thing my mother had worn for half her life.
It was the only heirloom she’d left me.

“Nice quality.” Amber rolled it between her fingers, examining it. “Did my husband buy you this, too?”
“That belonged to my mother. Give it back.”
“Your mother’s?” Stacy leaned in for a look and snorted. “If your mom knew her daughter was a homewrecker, she’d probably roll over in her grave.”

I clenched my fists.
“Give it back.
Amber stared at me for two seconds, then suddenly smiled.
“The more you care about something, the more I hate it.”
She held the jade ring up, examining it against the sun.
“Don’t!”
I lunged, my fingers missing hers by barely an inch.
Amber’s hand opened.
The jade slipped, carving a short arc through the air.
Impact.
The emerald green shattered into four or five pieces, scattering across the gravel beside the white train of her wedding dress.
I crouched down.
My knees hit the concrete.
The fragments were caught in the gap between the red carpet and the pavement, even the largest piece was
no bigger than a fingernail.
The day my parents left, they’d had someone bring this back to me.
They said they’d be back to celebrate my birthday once the mission ended.
They never came back.
All that returned were two urns, and this ring.
The commanding officer said they’d gone quietly.
Their last words were a request for him to deliver the ring to me.
I’d worn it for twelve years.
Now, it was broken.
Broken right next to the hem of this woman’s dress.
ľ
I started picking up the pieces, one by one. A jagged edge sliced into my finger, and blood began to drip down

my hand.
“Why are you even picking those up? It’s just a piece of rock.” Stacy kicked a fragment I couldn’t reach. “What, looking for sympathy?”
Amber looked down at me, her expression shifting into one of pity.
“Look at yourself. Crouched on the ground like you’re picking up trash.”
“Tell me, Eleanor-what kind of pathetic life have you been living all these years?”
