Chapter 1
On the night of Alexander Reed’s birthday, I was dragged into a dark alley by a group of thugs.
This time, I didn’t scream or fight back.
Because I knew-his precious first love, Sabrina Collins, was once again helping him put my loyalty to the
test
By the time I was carried into the ambulance, I was barely recognizable. My body was shattered, and the baby inside me had already turned into lifeless flesh and blood.
Just past midnight, as I expected, Alexander called.
His voice was cold and laced with fury.
“Have you lost your mind? They were just a few street punks! You could’ve handled them-why didn’t you fight back?”
“Sabrina’s test might’ve been a bit much this time, but she’s just being childish. You didn’t seriously let them
hurt you just to spite her, did you?”
“Luckily, she’s kind enough to stop things before they went too far. Otherwise, who knows what could’ve
happened!”
He barely finished the sentence before Sabrina’s sweet voice called him back to the party.
He hung up so fast that I didn’t even get to tell him-six months ago, Sabrina poisoned him just to test how
much I loved him.
As expected, I found the antidote and saved him-though it nearly destroyed my health in the process.
I hadn’t been strong enough to fight anyone for a long time.
And those men-urged on by Sabrina’s impatient orders-didn’t hold back at all.
Right before I lost consciousness, I managed to send him one last message: [Let’s get divorced. We’re done.]
***
I jolted awake, choking for air.
When I opened my eyes, Sabrina was strangling me with both hands.
Alexander stood beside her, watching coldly.

The moment she saw me awake, she didn’t loosen her grip. Instead, she smiled at him.
“See? I told you she was faking it.”
“You never believe me.”
She kept talking, all while tightening her grip in secret.
The pain in my throat grew unbearable. Instinctively, I clawed at her wrist.
In the struggle, my nails scraped across her hand.
She let out a dramatic gasp and threw herself into Alexander’s arms.
“Look what she did to me!”
He carefully examined the faint red scratch on Sabrina’s skin, and his expression turned dark.
Ignoring the fact that I was doubled over and coughing, he grabbed me by the collar and yanked me up.
“Eleanor, have you had enough?”
“Even if you’re angry, there’s a limit!”
When his gaze met my tear-reddened eyes, he hesitated for a second, then pressed his lips together and
released me.
“You’re pretending to be sick just to get my attention, aren’t you?”
“I can ignore the texts you sent. I can even let the whole ‘faking sick’ thing slide.”
“But now you’ve gone too far-you pretended to pass out and then scratched Sabrina.”
“Here’s what we’ll do. Apologize to her, and I’ll let it go. We’ll go home and focus on getting pregnant.”
At the word pregnant, my hand instinctively went to my stomach-the place that not long ago had carried a
tiny heartbeat.
I’d planned to surprise him that night, to hand him the ultrasound report and tell him we were going to be
parents.
A dull ache spread through my chest. I looked up at him.
“No. I want a divorce.”
He let out a mocking laugh, clearly not taking me seriously.

“Enough of the jokes, Eleanor. My patience is wearing thin.”
“Apologize to Sabrina. Now.”
There it was again-apologize to Sabrina.
Since the day she returned to the States, those words had become part of my daily life.
I remembered the time she arranged for a gang boss to kidnap Alexander.
I took seven bullets trying to save him.
He had been frantic when I was rushed into surgery, eyes bloodshot as he held my bloody hand.
But when I finally stabilized, he sighed and said softly.
“I told Sabrina you truly loved me, but she wouldn’t believe it. She wanted to test your loyalty.”
“She only did it because she cares about me. She’s been spoiled since she was a kid-never really learned how to handle things properly. Don’t take it too personally.”
“Also, Sabrina faints at the sight of blood. You scared her pretty badly. Once you’re discharged, make sure
you apologize to her.”
Then came the car accident.
Sabrina caused it herself, breaking my leg and leaving me to eight drunk men.
I fought them with everything I had, even after my nails tore off from clawing and kicking.
Just when the bottle smashed over my head and I thought I’d die there, Alexander finally showed up, he
kicked the men away.
But the damage was done.
My leg would never fully heal. Rainy days still felt like ants gnawing at my bones.
I developed severe post-traumatic stress disorder and spent months in a constant state of disorientation.
He held me then, whispering apologies.
“Sabrina insisted on making a bet with me-said she wanted to test you, to see how loyal you really were.”
“She claimed that only if you protected your virtue and refused to give in, even if it meant dying, would it
prove you truly loved me.”
“You know I’ve always had a hard time feeling secure, so I made sure there were people stationed nearby to

keep you safe. I figured nothing serious would happen, so I let her go ahead with it.”
“But Sabrina was pretty shaken up too. She came to see you a few days ago, and you pushed her over-
sprained her ankle. Once you’re stable, go apologize to her.”
After every so-called test, they brought in professionals to hypnotize me-to brainwash me into believing it
was all done out of love.
Time and again, it wasn’t until I stared death in the face that I finally realized-those so-called “tests” were nothing more than sick games they played, betting on my life.
Under the relentless cycle of hypnosis and brainwashing, I kept repeating the same words-“I’m sorry”-for
the most absurd reasons.
But what they didn’t realize was that after the three-hundredth time, it stopped working.
The human mind adapts. You can only be broken so many times before you stop feeling anything at all.
So this time, I decided to try something different.
I looked straight at Sabrina’s smug, taunting face, forced myself to sit up, and said, “Fine. I’ll apologize.”
