We didn’t speak again all the way until graduation. 

I knew I wasn’t as smart as Liam. 

Why else would I only transfer into this elite school senior year? 

So in that time, I stopped paying attention to them. I just threw myself into studying. 

The day it was all over, I felt like I could finally breathe. 

On the drive home with my parents, I spotted a kid thrashing in Mill Creek. 

Just his arms and hands, barely breaking the surface. 

I calculated fast, the water wasn’t deep enough to put me in danger. My parents were right there. 

I jumped in without hesitation. 

Everything went smoothly. 

The kid was just terrified and clung to me so tightly I couldn’t pry him off. 

I didn’t have time to change, so I rode to St. Jude’s Medical Center soaking wet. I stayed until his family 

rushed in, then finally slipped away. 

I still ended up with a high fever. 

By the time I recovered, it was already graduation day. 

The family I’d helped hadn’t had a chance to thank me properly because I’d been sick. 

So they came straight to the school. 

And they made it a huge deal. 

They found my teachers and presented a commendation banner. 

They even went to the principal and said they wanted to donate a building in my name. 

I heard all this right after we’d taken our class photo. 

Everyone was buzzing about it, not knowing who it was. 

“I was in the office, I heard the rich lady say it’s someone in our class. She also said the girl is drop-dead gorgeous. A total angel.”
