Alaric instead?” 

‘Those Langdon boys just have a look about them, don’t they? Always seducing our little girl!” 

The parents were so caught up in their dramatic whispering that they didn’t realize their voices were echoing right across the water. 

Nova popped her head out of the pool, splashing water from her eyes. ‘Mom? Dad? What are you doing?” 

Caught red-handed, they shuffled out of the shadows, wearing painfully ake smiles. “We… we just brought you kids some fruit! You know, in case you need a break!” 

Oh, absolutely!” Mr. Donald chimed in eagerly. “And if swimming gets boring, the home gym upstairs has tons of equipment!” 

They were grinning so hard it looked painful. 

Nova immediately knew her parents had gotten the wrong idea. Alaric was highly perceptive, and from the faint red flush crawling up the back of his neck, he had clearly picked up on their wild assumptions too. He sharply turned his head away.

Pulling herself out of the water, Nova took the fruit platter from her nother. “Thanks, Mom. Now go back inside! Stop staring!” 

‘Oh, honey,” Mrs. Donald winked. “We’re just trying to help!”

Nova practically shooed them back into the house. Taking a deep breath, she turned back to Alaric. “So… back to the laps.” 

She tried to play it cool and slipped back into the water, but internally, she 

was mortified. 

Her original plan had been purely strategic. Knowing that Alaric would eventually reclaim his birthright as the eldest son of Harborview’s wealthiest dynasty, The Garrison Family, she wanted to secure an alliance. Plus, he had saved her life, and she couldn’t stand watching him suffer under his abusive family.
