The Lucan Marked Me - Chapter (13)

Chapter 13
Sienna
The smell of bacon and eggs filled the room as Mara and I finished with preparing breakfast. I
poured myself a cup of tea as we settled down to eat, feeling as though there was a mass
lodged in my chest. “Here.” She said, sliding a plate towards me. “Eat. You need your
strength.”
I took the plate but didn’t touch it. I’ve been feeling kind of queasy lately. For one, I was weak
most of the time. Feeling tired, even when I’d barely moved around. And then sometimes it
felt like my senses were heightened. My powers were probably getting stronger for some
reason. I wouldn’t know for sure until I found out exactly what bloodline I was from. Which
was why I’d finally decided I was going to talk to Mara about it.
I just needed to figure out a way to bring up the conversation. I picked at the eggs in my
plate, clearing my throat. “Mara…” I began, my voice low and hesitant. She paused, holding
her fork mid-air. I saw her cool mask slip. Just for a moment. I realized then she already knew
what I wanted to talk about. There had been a brief flare of excitement in her eyes before
she’d quickly schooled her expression.
She gave me a small smile. A small, knowing smile. “You’ve been quiet this morning.” She
pointed out quietly, forking some eggs into her mouth. “What’s on your mind?” I let out a
small breath. What was on my mind? I didn’t know where to start. It was all too much, too
many things I didn’t want to face. I didn’t want to rehash the past-which was what I knew
would likely happen-I knew I couldn’t keep pretending. I had to know.
I had to find out what bloodline I belonged to, if we were very much the abomination the pack
saw us as. I wanted to know why we’d been chosen, and why we had to live in fear because of
something we had absolutely no control over. “I want to know about us,” I said, my throat dry.
“About our bloodline. About… everything.”

Mara was silent at first, but there was a look in her eyes that told me she was proud I’d finally
decided to stop running away from the truth. She tilted her head to the side, patiently waiting
for me to voice my questions. My fingers curled around the edge of the table so tightly, I was
sure my knuckles had gone completely white. It had been so easy to barely give thought to my
powers, but now, faced with the reality that I was about to get all the answers I’d been
searching for, a wave of anxiety hit me.
Mara might be living a much more comfortable life than I had been, but we still had a few not
so positive things in common. Like that she was still living in isolation from the pack. “All my
life I was raised to believe I was nothing more than a weak Omega,” I announced quietly.
“These powers…where are they from? Is it true what the other wolves say about us? That we’re
cursed?” My tone was thick with confusion with each question that I asked.
Mara set her fork down, shaking her head. “No, my dear,” She replied calmly. “We’re part of a
rare bloodline-the Eldryn bloodline.and these powers that we have? They’re actually a gift
from the moon goddess.” A small smile overtook her face. “One of our ancestors had done a
great thing-laid down his life for a friend-and in the end the goddess had blessed him with
abilities unlike anyone had ever seen before.”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “So why are we in hiding?”
Mara shook her head sadly. “Because dear, it didn’t take long for people to get frightened of
the abilities we’d been blessed with.” Her head tilted and her expression was as if she was
reminiscing a bad memory. “And fear absolutely destroys people. They hunted down our kind
and killed them off.” Her gaze locked firmly with mine. “Your father-”
“Please no,” I cut in, sharply. “I don’t want to hear about them.” She had probably seen my
past with her vision or something. Learning the truth of what had happened to my parents in
addition to hearing about our bloodline was too much for me to bear. And what did it matter
anyway? It’s not like any of it was going to bring them back. Mara looked a little disappointed
again at my cowardice, but she quickly covered it up,
“We’ve been forced to live in hiding ever since,” She concluded.

“Wow,” I said beneath my breath. We silently went back to our meal as I tried to wrap my head
around everything she had said. A rare bloodline. All these while I’d thought we’d been cursed
or something. When in truth we were only forced to live like this because others were scared
of the things we could do. It was all too much. I lifted my eyes to Mara. “Can I come with you
to the shop?” I requested. “It’s too much, I need to distract myself after learning all this.”
She parted her lips, and it was very clear she was about to refuse.
“Please,” I begged. “I’ll lay low, I won’t do anything to cause any attention, and if it helps, you can help me out with my powers so I can master them well.” My voice was a hurried plea.
She mulled my words over for a few seconds before sighing. Just in case she was still about to
leave me, I clasped my hands together and made puppy dog eyes at her. She raised an
eyebrow, amusement flashing across her features.
“Get dressed then. We’ve got things to take care of.”
