Logan
I was in my study when I received the message from one of my warriors that the elders were
in the pack. It had barely been three days since their last visit. A part of me had wanted to
immediately dismiss them but I knew I would only regret it in the end. They would decide to
take matters into their own hands. And their decision would have me wishing I’d just chosen
to give them an ear in the first place.
And right now, it was obvious they wanted to.
I rounded up with the files I was attending to and immediately made my way to the throne
room. They hadn’t been ushered into the throne room yet, so I had a few seconds to brace
myself before coming face-to-face with them. Their footsteps were so silent I wouldn’t have
known they were already approaching, if I hadn’t kept my eyes on the door.
Surprisingly, Vaughn was the first to speak, his voice an authoritative timbre that grated my
nerves. “You know why we’re here, Logan.” He said flatly. My anger was immediately fanned.
Again with this bullshit. I clenched my jaw, gripping the edge of the desk. I could already feel
the tension building in my bones. “I’m aware,” I muttered, keeping my gaze locked firmly on
his.
It appeared my words to them the last time had gone over their heads. I wasn’t ready for their
demands, not now, not ever, but there was no escaping this. “We expect you to announce
it soon,” Vaughn continued, his eyes flashing with something challenging. “The Choosing
ceremony. It’s necessary and we all know it. The pack needs a queen, someone strong. You will
not delay it any longer.”
I leaned back in my chair, taking a breath to calm the growing storm in my chest. “I’m aware,”
I repeated, my voice tighter than I intended. The Choosing Ceremony. The ones Lycan King’s
hosted in order to select a worthy mate. Naturally, the pack had been whispering about it for a

few days now. It didn’t matter how private I’d been trying to keep the elders’s visit, word had
still gotten around somehow.
I listened as Braem numbered what they expected the choosing ceremony to entail. High-
ranking females, ones worthy of being my queen, they said. The very thought of it twisted
something inside me, but I tampered it down, forcing the mask of indifference back into place.
I was still trying to sort out my thoughts when Vaughn dropped the final blow, as if though he
was enjoying every second of my misery.
“And remember, Logan. You have a duty to this pack. To your lineage. To the future of the
Lycans.” He added. I managed a small smile in his direction, knowing I’d be damned before I
let him get any reaction out of me. He wanted to remind me what my duty to the pack was
each time he visited? He could very well be my guest. If they wanted a Choosing ceremony so
badly, I would arrange one, but no one was forcing me to mate with someone I wasn’t ready
because they were. “Fine. I’ll
My lips parted, the words coming out like they were forced,
announce it.” My voice was still a little too sharp, even though I tried to hide the fury
behind it. There was no fight left in me for this battle, not today. “If that is all, I suggest
you be on your way.” I stated flatly. Their faces flashed with irritation but subtle bow and
began heading for the door. I swore under my breath, watching until they had disappeared
from my line of sight.
I wasn’t going to play their game.
I was going to make sure it was clear to everyone one way or another, this Choosing Ceremony
was a formality. Nothing more. They could make me have it, but they couldn’t make me choose
to be with someone I didn’t want to. Yes, I was going to spread the words to other packs, have
their most worthy females attend. But I wasn’t going to choose anyone. The time to choose a
Queen who would rule beside me was finally here. But the idea of another woman by my side
made my stomach churn. I suddenly couldn’t stand the thought of it.
Maybe things would have been different if I had never met her. If I didn’t know what it felt

like to be with her, even for such an extremely short amount of time. Maybe I wouldn’t be
reluctant to bond with someone else if I hadn’t known what it felt and sounded and tastes
like. Now, images of her were the only things I had to hold on to. And I wasn’t in a hurry to
let them go. If it was about the war, I was convinced I didn’t need a Queen. I only needed my
warriors.

And a good head on my shoulders…
But then, a flash of Sienna’s face crossed my mind, her defiance, her fire. The way she’d stared
at me that second time when I’d invited her for dinner. The way I’d woken up beside her and
suddenly everything had felt alright in the world. I slammed my fist against the desk, shaking
off the memory, the thought of her. That was a road I couldn’t afford to keep going down.
Despite the lies I told myself, despite my many attempts to convince myself I’d done the right
thing, I couldn’t erase the truth that hovered over me like a dark cloud: I wanted her. Gods,
did I want her. I found myself constantly thinking about her. Wondering if I was in her head
just as much as she was in mine. Or if she had already picked up her life without me.
I would make the announcement to my pack alright.
But damn it.
The thought of anyone trying to take her place made my skin burn…
