I hated the feeling of being out of control.
For two days now, my powers had been fluctuating. It wasn’t the first time something like this
had happened, but this was different. I couldn’t explain it, but it felt like the reason they were
going haywire was coming from…inside. I’d tried brushing it off at first, but the pull in my
chest was just too strong to be ignored. I ran my fingers over the tarot cards scattered across
the table, the edges worn from the countless times Mara had shuffled them.
“Everything okay?” Mara asked from behind me, her voice cutting through the silence. I
turned to face her, pushing the cards aside and meeting her gaze. She always had this calm,
steady look in her eyes.
“No,” I muttered, not bothering to hide the frustration in my voice. “I can’t control them,
Mara. My powers. I feel like I’m losing my mind.”
Her brows furrowed, but she didn’t interrupt. She never did when I was trying to open up about something, and that was one of the things I admired about her. She’d always been patient with me, letting me work through the things I couldn’t say aloud until I was ready to
say them.
“I thought maybe it would get easier,” I continued, my fingers still tracing invisible patterns on the cards. “But it’s getting worse. I can…feel it. In my blood, in my skin. It’s like something inside is causing them to spiral out of control, and I don’t know how to stop it.” Even as I explained, my heart hammered in my chest, my powers simmering beneath my skin.
“Does it always feel like this?” I asked, my voice quiet. We weren’t in the cabin, and even though there was no one in the tarot shop currently, Mara had taught me we could never be too careful. Even the walls have ears, she’d warned. I couldn’t control my own body anymore, let alone the powers I was still learning to wield. Mara hummed at the back of her throat.

She stepped closer, her eyes soft with concern. “It’s the bloodline,” she said slowly. “Our
bloodline can be…different. There are other bloodlines, you know. Even rarer ones. But
ours…it’s not always easy to control. And it doesn’t help that you’ve been running away from
them for quite a while instead of doing the opposite. Our powers…it’s older than anything
we’ve ever understood. And it won’t be tamed by force.
“What exactly am I supposed to do?” I asked, throwing my hands up in the air. I was
frustrated with the feeling of being completely out of control, despite Mara’s attempts to help
me control them.
She hesitated. “You have to learn to accept it. Truly accept it. The truth is, it won’t work if
you’re trying toaster it for the wrong reasons. Like getting better at pretending it’s not a part
of who you are. The more you fight it, even subconsciously, the harder it gets.”I took a deep
breath, trying to calm myself, even though the familiar burning sensation of frustration rolled
through me again.
I’d been doing a good job at forgetting Logan’s rejection. But now, all the things I had no
control over came crashing back into my memory. Before I could say anymore to Mara, the
small bell at the door post rang, signalling a customer had just stepped in. Mara rubbed the
back of my palm affectionately before turning to welcome the new customer.
She greeted the woman with a warm smile, the practiced ease of her voice smoothing over the
awkwardness. I forced myself to sit back down, pushing my thoughts aside, though the
tightness in my chest didn’t go away so easily. As Mara spoke with the woman, I half-listened,
my mind still clouded with the reminders of my own issues. The woman was asking about a
reading; nothing unusual. I barely focused on her words until I heard the mention of
something that froze my blood.
“I received a letter this morning from the Alpha,” the woman said, her voice casual. “You know
the Lycan King of Iron Fang? King Logan?” Mara nodded as she continued shuffling the cards.
“He sent an invitation to our pack for his choosing ceremony. Quite a spectacle, they say. He’s
finally picking his mate.” My heart stopped for a moment, like the world had briefly tilted and
then righted itself again.

I barely heard the rest of what she said as the words ‘Lycan King of Iron Fang’ reverberated in
my skull. Lycan King. Of Iron Fang. Lycan King. Of Iron Fang.
I couldn’t breathe.
Logan.
Everything I’d been avoiding hit me in a single, crushing wave. Had I really thought I’d gotten
him out of my mind? What a joke. I pressed my palm to my chest, willing the ache to vanish.
The woman’s voice pulled me back to reality, her gaze focused on me now. “Are you okay,
dear? You look a bit pale.” I blinked, forcing a smile that felt very fake. I swallowed hard, but
the lump in my throat wouldn’t go away.
“I’m fine,” I said, even though I knew it was a lie. “Just… a little tired.”
I felt Mara’s gaze burning into the side of my face. I stood up quickly, my legs shaky beneath
- “Excuse me,” I muttered. “I need some air.” Without waiting for a response, I stepped
toward the door, my heart pounding in my chest. I needed space. I needed some distance. I
needed to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do with a bond that was obviously about
to be buried in the ground.
Logan wanted to move on from our bond?
Fine.
I was going to do the same.
Even if it killed me.
