Chapter 16
Logan
I shouldn’t do this.

I was making a mistake.
The thought kept repeating in my mind, but the truth was, I wasn’t sure what I needed to do
anymore. My eyes moved lazily over the gathered members of The Circle. Kael, standing at
attention as always. He barely sat down for any discussion. Livia, her fingers lightly drumming
against the edge of the table, a quiet tension in her movements. Cassian, leaning back in his
chair like he couldn’t care less, though I could feel his focus on me.
Nessa, her gaze flickering between the papers in front of her and me, as if gauging what I was
really thinking. And Elise, seated across from me, the only one who truly seemed to
understand how far gone I really was.
“Logan,” Kael spoke up, his voice cutting through my foggy thoughts. “The ceremony needs to
be confirmed. We’re running out of time.” I nodded, barely paying attention. I’d been hearing
the same thing for days now. It wasn’t enough that I’d already sent out invitations, everyone
needed a specific date. One I was reluctant to give.
Because then the motions would begin and I’d be powerless to stop it. Every worthy female
would get their chance to prove themselves, and then I would make my decision public. It was
what the pack expected from me. The one thing I should’ve already done, days ago. And still, I
couldn’t make myself care. I shifted my gaze to Elise.
She was the softest out of all the members of the inner Circle, the most empathetic. She
caught it immediately, the way my eyes didn’t meet hers fully, the way I was staring at the
table as if I could bury myself in the polished wood. I didn’t have to say a word for her to
know it was killing me to do this.

And, damn it, she always knew how to read me like no one else. She was one of the few who
didn’t pretend to see the mask I’d put on for everyone else. “You don’t have to go through
with this if you don’t want to.” She said quietly, ignoring the looks from the others. She could
be soft but firm when she wanted to be. “If it’s really this difficult, Logan-”
“That’s enough,” I cut in before she could finish. The words came out colder than I’d intended,
but she’d pushed too far. I’d known where the conversation would have gone if I’d allowed it.
She didn’t flinch. Her eyes stayed steady, holding mine. There was no question of irritation in
them, no anger, no confusion. Just understanding. I sat back in my chair, trying to force myself
to focus on anything other than the jagged pieces of me I was trying to suppress.
The other members of the Inner Circle fell silent after the interlude. I was sure they had
questions of their own. It was unlike me to drag things out, not step up to the task when I had
a responsibility to carry out. But no one could possibly understand the shit you went through
after meeting your fated mate and turning her away. In a way I was both angry and relieved
that they didn’t ask about her. About Sienna.
I definitely didn’t want to dwell on why it had happened, but it angered me that they were not
giving her so much as a second thought. Like she was no one significant. Words had spread
the morning that I’d ordered for her to be escorted out of the pack, and still, no one had
bothered to call me out on it. Well, no one except Cassian.
“So no one is going to ask about her?” I asked calmly, cursing myself for not being able to let
it go. What did I expect from them? For most of them, their loyalty was first with the pack,
and then with me. Not the other way around. The moment my question registered, there was a
slight shift in the room. It became a little thick with awkwardness, which wasn’t a usual
emotion that they showed.
Hell, Kael even looked a bit uncomfortable as he shifted from foot to foot, his jaw tight, saying
nothing. They couldn’t exactly trash talk my mate. It didn’t matter that she was an Omega.
Fortunately for them, I hated the awkwardness as well, Cassian barely looked up from his
papers, a small smirk playing at the corner of his mouth as if he knew just how much I hated
every second of this. I could barely make out the expression on Nessa’s face.

Chapter 16
No one answered my question.
And that was fine. I didn’t need their opinions.

I sat up in my chair. I’d called them together so I could give them orders. Enough of the
stalling. I clasped my hands together, placing them on the desk. “The mating ceremony will go
on as expected,” I announced. “Fix the date for this weekend and send a follow-up invitation
to all the packs concerned.” I waited for their nods before turning to Livia. “I need you to get
the throne room ready for the event.” I didn’t have to say more than that, she knew I meant
the decor and all.
I instructed Nessa and Elise to take care of everything our guests might need. The rest of
them were in charge of protection; making sure the territory was well guarded against any
uninvited intruders. As I rounded up with giving them instructions, relief relaxed their
postures. They had gotten what they wanted. The ceremony was going to take place. I was
going to choose a Queen. Move in from a bond that had barely existed.
At least to them.
It didn’t take long for us to be done, and then I dismissed them, watching as they left to
immediately spring into action. But as I sat there, trying to ignore the feeling in my chest, I
couldn’t help but wonder if I was making the right decision.
Or the biggest mistake of my life.
