Chapter 29

I woke up with a gasp.
My heart was racing, beads of sweat pooling on my forehead and rolling down the sides of my
face. My breath was coming out in short pants, my chest rising and falling rapidly. My throat
was tight, like I’d been screaming for days. The room was quiet, but it wasn’t a comforting
kind of quiet. I sat there in the dark, gripping the blanket like it could somehow anchor me
back to reality. I’d seen him in my dreams.
Logan.
The image of him was still sharp behind my eyes, blood streaked across his face, his body
twisted on the battlefield, lifeless. The dream was vivid. Too vivid to the point it made me
wonder if it had actually happened. I pressed the heels of my palms into my eyes, willing it all
away. It didn’t help. The ache in my chest stayed. What was going on? Why had I seen him in
my dreams? Why had he been…dead? I thought back to all the times I’d wished for the
goddess to punish him, a cold weight settling in my gut as it dawned on me.
I couldn’t actually bear to see him hurt.
I’d only wishes those things out of anger and hurt. I couldn’t…couldn’t actually deal with it if
something ever happened to him. But nothing had, right? He was fine. He had to be. I shook
my head, hating how I was feeling. I hated that he still lived in my dreams. Hated that even
now, after all this time and without even being here, he could still leave me feeling like I was
breaking. A soft knock came at the door. There was only one person it could be.
“Sienna?” Mara’s voice filtered into the room, low and cautious.
I didn’t answer right away. I just stared at the window where dawn hadn’t even started
bleeding into the sky yet. “It’s me,” I croaked eventually, knowing I had probably done

something to wake her up. “Come in.” I added seconds later. After I’d steadied my breathing
and wiped the sweat from my forehead. She slipped inside, her robe wrapped tightly around
her and her face brimming with concern.
“Nightmare?” she asked gently.

I nodded, pulling the blanket tighter around my shoulders. “Yes,” I replied simply. “It
felt…real. I dreamt he’d gone to battle…and lost.” Mara crossed the room and sat beside me on
the edge of the bed. When I leaned against her shoulder, she wrapped an arm around me,
rubbing my sides soothingly. I closed my eyes, feeling a heavy weight in my chest. Was this
what it felt like to have someone in your corner? To not feel so alone all the time?
“The bond never really lets go without a proper rejection, does it?” she murmured.
I nodded absentmindedly. It was another thing I didn’t understand. Why he hadn’t just
rejected me. It wasn’t like everyone hadn’t found out with the way he’d ordered for me to be
sent out of the back that something had happened between us. None of this would have
happened if he’d just outrightly rejected me. The mate bond wouldn’t be completely severed
until then, at least not on my part. “No, it doesn’t,” I whispered, ashamed a part of me was
thankful for it, even now.
Mara inhaled a deep sigh, and we sat in silence for a while.
“Do you think,” she said slowly, “that he had a reason for what he did? For pushing you
away?”
I twisted my lips to the side. “I’ve thought about it a thousand times,” I admitted. “But none
of the answers I come up with feel good enough.” Mara didn’t say anything back. Maybe
because she knew there was nothing to say. Or maybe because she didn’t have the heart to
feed me another kind lie.

morning and the sun was just beginning to rise. I stepped out of the room, making my way to
the kitchen. When Elias bounded over to say good morning, I silently thanked the goddess he
had slept in Mara’s room last night and not mine, else I would have scared him with how
violently I’d reacted to the dream about Logan.
Mara poured some tea into a cup, sliding it in front of me before sitting down. “I was
thinking,” she started, voice careful, “that maybe I could do a reading for you.”
I blinked. “A reading?”
“For your dreams,” she clarified. “It might help make sense of them…or at least ease the
weight of not knowing.”
I stared into my tea for a long moment, slowly getting her meaning. The idea was tempting.
Not knowing what the drama meant was almost as bad as the dream itself, but I wasn’t sure I
was ready to hear what the cards or the goddess or the universe had to say. If they told me he
was gone for good, or that he had never really cared for me at all-even that night, I didn’t
know if I could take it.
“I think I’d rather not know,” I said finally, lifting my eyes to hers. “Not yet.”
She gave a small nod. “Whenever you’re ready.”

After Mara left the kitchen, I sat alone for a while, thinking about how easy it would be to let
the memories just…fade completely. To erase the sound of his voice from my mind. To stop
imagining what it would’ve been like if he’d stayed. To forget the details of that one night.
And still the truth was…I didn’t want to forget. Maybe that was the real problem. That a part
of me still held out hope. Still wanted the impossible.
I took a deep breath, pushing my head back. “Why are you still in my head?” I whispered to no

one, sighing for the umpteenth time. Mara would have the answers, I knew.
I just wasn’t ready to hear them.
