I was in the courtroom going through some files when a knock sounded on the door. I was just
about to give permission to whoever it was when the door already got pushed open. I knew
who it was going to be without raising my head. I was already talking before he could get a
word out. “If it’s another dead end-”
“She’s been found,” he said.
That got my attention. I raised my head, turning my gaze to his. He silently closed the doors
behind him, stepping further into the room. He didn’t seem rattled by the annoyed gaze I shot
him for walking into the room without my permission. But then he wouldn’t be Cassian if he
let it bother him. “Where?” I inquired.
He took a while peek at the files I was looking at before putting some distance between us and
folding his arms across his chest. “She’s set up in an abandoned temple beyond the pack’s
borders. Alone, as far as we can tell.” I closed the file in front of me. The second he finished
speaking, I was already standing. I knew I needed to quickly get in touch with her before she
had some crazy foresight about my intended visit.
And deliberately went off the grid.

The temple was an old building surrounded by bone-white ash trees. She was already waiting
outside when I arrived, as though she’d known exactly when I would come. Which, of course,
she actually had. She gave me a look I couldn’t quite make out, immediately turning and
heading for the temple. “I was wondering how long you’d make me wait.” She murmured
underneath her breath.
I could barely make out her words as I scanned my gaze around the temple. “You gave me

riddles. Not a prophecy.”

She paused, twisting her neck to throw me another unreadable look over her shoulder. “Is that
what you think?” She asked
“You said you were the one who had given the elders the prophecy,” I calmly reminded her as I
followed her into a small room filled with books and herbs, my nose tickled-and dust. Lots
and lots of dust. She walked behind a desk, lowering herself down and offering me the seat
across from her. I took it, picking up from where I left off. “You said I had to choose strength.
That the wrong queen would lead to ruin. You made me believe she’d die if she stayed.”
“No,” she said softly. “You believed what you feared.”
I stared at her. “You played with words. Made me abandon her.”
She shook her head ruefully. “The elders wanted to make sure all the kingdoms were doing
well. They asked for the truth, and I gave it. But I never said where the strength lay. You
looked for it in bloodlines, in readiness…but never once in heart.” She clasped her hands
together, placing her elbows on the desk. “I guess the elders themselves had also
misunderstood the prophecy, or else they would have called you to order after you had sent
her away.”
I almost said that they weren’t aware, barely catching myself in time. There was very little the
elders weren’t aware of. If they hadn’t said a word about it, then it was because they didn’t
want to. I clenched my jaws. “You should have been clearer.”
“If you had listened,” she whispered, “you would’ve heard what you needed to. But you were
too busy hearing what you wanted to.”
I exhaled harshly, turning away before the frustration broke into something worse. “Will she
be in danger?” She knew what I was truly asking. If I went in search of her. If I found her and
asked her to return with me to the pack. Would I be endangering her life?

“She always has been. That was never the prophecy’s burden. Yours was to see her clearly.”
Her words made no damn sense. That was never the prophecy’s burden? What the fuck did
that even mean? She was still giving me riddles when I needed facts. Needed something solid
to hold on to. I watched her as she rose to her feet. “The rest, you would figure out on your
own.”

And just like that, she was done

Once again I found myself heading for the lower village. This time, I didn’t question it. The
rundown, empty shack was beginning to feel more familiar than I ever wanted to admit. I
ignored the handful of cautious Omegas watching from behind cracked doors, wide-eyed and
quiet. “I’m not here to hurt anyone,” I said roughly.
None of them said a word.
I exhaled, running a hand through my hair. There was a small group close to Sienna’s shack. I
turned to them. “Did she ever talk to any of you?” I asked, nodding towards the dingy building
beside me so they would know exactly who I was talking about. “Did she ever say where she
might be headed from here?” I was met with silence. I was already drawing a conclusion that
they would be of no help when a young female stepped forward.
“She…kept to herself,” she said a bit fearfully. “Never spoke much.”
I nodded once.
“Do you know where she might be now?” I asked.
The girl looked heartbroken when she shook her head. I left before they could see me unravel
any more than I already had. Before I embarrassed myself further by searching for a ghost.

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat in my office, staring at the same map I’d stared at a thousand times. A dozen dots and
borders marked territories I no longer gave a damn about. None of them had her. We still had
a few places to cover. After that-if I still hadn’t found her, I had to live with the fact that our
paths might never again cross. The worst part?
Even now, I still wasn’t sure if I’d made a mistake…
Or if this had just been our fate all along.
