The metallic clang of swords filled the air.
Below me, the training grounds was in chaos, controlled, focused chaos-but still chaos
nonetheless. Warriors clashed in sweat-slicked bursts of speed and power, feet kicking up dust,
and their bodies almost moving in rhythm. It was the kind of chaos I usually found comfort
in, but somehow, not today. My arms were crossed, boots firm on the stone balcony
overlooking the field. For some reason the pressure in my chest wouldn’t ease.
I should’ve felt pride watching them train. Instead, I felt like I was being taunted. It felt like I
was staring down at the enemy as they prepared for battle right in front of me. Not knowing
who I could trust was a bigger inconvenience than I’d imagined at first. The warriors were not
just protectors of the pack, they were also messengers. Since there were now traitors amongst
them, I need to be more careful with who I talked about what, or risk information getting to
the wrong ears.
Cassian joined me without a word, standing quietly by my side for a few minutes. He leaned
against the railing beside him, appearing casual to whoever cared to look. I caught the glance
he shot my way though, and there was nothing casual in them. I grinded my jaws, still trying
to figure out how to admit what I should’ve said years ago. “I’m going to start looking for
her,” I said finally, waiting for his reaction.
A beat passed. “You think she’s still out there?”
“I know she is.” My voice came out rough. He knew exactly what I meant when I said I was
going to start looking for her. I wasn’t leaving it to chance anymore. I was going to take
matters into my own hands,
Cassian didn’t speak for a moment. Then, “You’re five years late.”

“I know.”

We stood there, the silence between us louder than the clashing weapons. Then I straightened,
nodding toward the war room. “Gather the Circle.”

They filtered in within a few minutes.
Kael and Livia came first. Tobias and Nessa showed up shortly after, mid-banter, but went
silent the second they stepped through the doors and caught the weight of the room.
No one took a seat.
“I need to tell you something,” I began, not bothering with pleasantries. “Something I’ve kept
from you. From all of you.”
That got their attention.
I looked at each of them, the ones I trusted most. My inner circle. My family, even if I’d never
said it out loud. “Before I sent Sienna away, I received a prophecy.” I informed, knowing this
wouldn’t be news for some of them. I’d mentioned the prophecy a few times, but I hadn’t
actually told them exactly what it had been. The tension in the room shifted slightly, as they
all waited for me to carry on.
“It came from a seer I believed to be reliable. She said I would need to choose a queen strong
enough to carry the pack through the darkness.” Livia frowned. Nessa muttered something
under her breath. “I thought I was protecting the pack by letting her go,” I said. “But I
misunderstood the prophecy. The seer told me I’d made a mistake by looking for strength in
the wrong place. So now I have to do whatever I can to fix it.”
Tobias let out a low whistle. “Well. That explains a lot.”
“It explains everything,” Kael said tightly. “The attacks. The unrest. All of it.”

I nodded. “Something it’s on its way. Something big. And now that we’ve been given a warning,
it’s only smart that we do all it takes to conquer at the end.”
“What now?” Livia asked, as we all finally settled down. They silently waited for instructions,
completely trusting my judgement. I tapped my fingers lightly on the desk, feeling the
significance of the decision I was about to make settle in my chest. I reminded myself I wasn’t
making the wrong decision. The seer had confirmed I’d made a mistake. That I’d
misunderstood the prophecy.
She hadn’t clearly stated what I was supposed to do to concerning the attacks, but at least
now I knew it had nothing to do with sending Sienna away. I intertwined my fingers, placing
them on the desk and meeting their eyes. I only had to give them my orders and that was it.
They weren’t to question it. They had no right.
“I’m going to find her. Whether the traitor turns up in the packs we search or not, whether
she’s there or not…I’m looking for her.”
A long pause.
Then Nessa leaned forward slightly. “If she comes back, if you find her and she refuses you?”
My jaw tensed. I hadn’t wanted to consider the possibility of that happening because the truth
was, she had every right to refuse me. If she was the one the prophecy had spoken of, if I was
going to bring her back with me to the pack, then I was simply going to have to find my way
around it. “If she refuses me, then I’m going to find a way around it. But too much is at stake
to simply walk away without a fight. Especially if she’s the one the prophecy spoke of.”
“And if she doesn’t want to be queen?” Nessa asked. “The prophecy still calls for one.”
I held her gaze firmly. “Then we’ll just have to see, won’t we?”
No one pushed further. The truth was, I had no idea what I’d find at the end of this. I didn’t
know if she would forgive me. I didn’t even know if she should, after what I’d done. Taking her

virginity and then tossing her out like she was nothing. No, there were a lot of things I wasn’t
sure of. But I was sure of one thing, whatever was coming for us, we weren’t winning without
her. If only for my sanity’s sake, I was going to have to find her.
And when I did…I wasn’t letting her go.
