I was drying my hands when Mara informed me she wanted to talk to me about something
important. She’d given me a heads up, letting me know I might not like what she wanted to
say. Her little heads up had spooked me enough to take even longer time at the sink. I’d
almost washed and dried my hands five times when she asked if I wasn’t done yet.
Well aware I couldn’t stall any longer, I finally dried my hands for the last time before joining
her at the small table in the room where we had our meals. I pushed my hair behind my ears,
steeling myself for the bad news. “What’s up?” I asked with a nonchalance I didn’t feel. The
fact that she looked genuinely troubled only heightened my fear.
Her lips parted and closed for a few times before she finally steadied herself enough to speak.
“I don’t think you and Elias will be safe here much longer.” I could have sworn there was a
thunderstorm right after her announcement. I forced myself to reign in my emotions, simply
blinking at her for a few seconds.
“You’ve said that before,” I finally muttered. “We’re still here.”
“But you might not be tomorrow,” she said gently, as if that would make the words less sharp.
“There’s only so long you can outrun the eye of fate, Sienna. You know that.”
Fate. I almost laughed. She always made it sound like fate was a person, like it knocked
politely and waited for you to answer. When the truth was that fate kicked down your door
and dragged you out screaming. At least, it was for me. “I can protect my son,” I said. Firmer
this time. Like if I said it with enough conviction, it would rewrite reality. I didn’t care what
her premonition was. I didn’t care what the moon goddess, what fate had in store for us. I was
going to protect him with every fiber of my being, if it was the last thing I did.
Mara didn’t say anything for a long time. She leaned back in her seat and I was almost
tempted to believe she had dropped it. Luckily, I knew her better than that. We’d formed a

solid bond these past years Elias and I had been living with her. And even though I often
disappointed her with my stubbornness and cowardice, she was still as patient with me as the
day I’d woken up in her cabin. I gave it a rest for a minute, silently counting down in my head.
Suddenly her voice pierced the air.
“You know the one person who could protect both of you.”
“No.” The word came out before she even finished her sentence. “Absolutely not.”
“You didn’t even let me-”
“I don’t need to,” I snapped, turning to face her fully now. “You’re talking about Logan.”
Mara didn’t flinch. “He’s the King, Sienna! Elias’s father. Whether you like it or not, that still
means something.”
I shook my head, letting out a mocking scoff. “He’s also the reason we’re in hiding. The reason
I’ve had to raise Elias in secret. The reason Elias doesn’t even know what a father’s touch feels
like. So no, I’m not going to crawl back and ask him for protection just because the winds feel
a little colder today.” She gave me that look. The one that said she understood my hurt but
not my pride. Well, I didn’t expect her to.
No one could understand what it felt like to wake up to a cold bed after losing your virginity,
nor could they understand the humiliation that came with being escorted out of the pack
minutes later. I needed air. And space. She thought Elias and I were in danger? I needed to
prove to her that we were fine. “Elias,” I called, firmly holding her gaze. “Get your shoes. Let’s
go for a walk.”
I softened my gaze as Elias began getting ready. “I know all this is coming from a place of
concern Mara, but Elias and I will be fine.” She heard the rest of the words I hadn’t said out
loud. Without him. Minutes later, Elias and I were taking a walk around the pack. No one
looked twice at us. There were no narrowed gazes. No suspicious whispers. No sniffing for

scents they didn’t recognize. Just… normalcy. It was almost as though we truly belonged. Elias
skipped ahead a little, pointing out a puppy that had darted across the path.
My shoulders relaxed.
Mara was wrong. We were safe.
Elias dropped back beside me after a while, sliding his hand into mine.”Hey,” I began casually.
“Have you drawn him again? The man from last time?”
He looked up at me and shook his head, curls bouncing with the motion. “Nope. Not since that
day.”
“You sure?”
“Yep.” He sounded sure too. “Maybe he’s gone.”
I doubted it. We walked for a little while longer, past familiar streets and unfamiliar faces,
until my feet started to ache and I decided it was time to go home. When we got to the cabin,
it was to find Mara at the table, calmly taking a sip of her tea.. She raised an eyebrow when
she saw me. “Feel better?” she asked.
“No one even looked at us,” I replied coolly, brushing off my coat. “See? We’re fine.”
“For now,” she murmured.
I pretended not to hear her.
Later that night, as I tucked Elias into bed and pressed a kiss to his forehead, I wondered if
she was right. If I was making the biggest mistake ever, keeping Logan from his son.
And what exactly I was going to do about it.
