There were a lot of things I was prepared for, scraped knees, broken dishes, maybe even Elias
turning an entire set of crayons into a weapon of minor destruction. From the moment I’d
decided I wasn’t going to sweep his powers under the rug anymore, I’d mentally began
preparing myself for a lot of unexpected things that could happen. And I’d almost been
convinced there was nothing I was unprepared for. But I was unprepared for this.
After having some semblance of normalcy in our lives once again, I hadn’t expected Elias to
come up with another sketch of Logan. I’d settled for believing the first drawing was also
going to be the last, but clearly the moon goddess had other plans in store for me. Elias
dropped the drawing in my lap while I was reading a book Mara had picked up for me from
one of the pack’s libraries.
“I tried to make him look nicer this time,” He said excitedly, jumping around in that carefree
way he usually did. I immediately understood who he was talking about before even staring
down at the paper, but that didn’t reduce the piercing ache in my heart when I stared at the
man who I now had more in common with than just one passionate night spent together. I
blinked at the paper, taking in Logan’s features.
Dark eyes, that same firm mouth Elias somehow managed to sketch with near-perfect
precision, even though he’d never seen him. Shoulders too broad for the paper. And that all
too familiar look in his eyes. The kind that told you to think twice about challenging him
because you might not live to tell the tale. In my own case, I’d been lucky. I’d done much more
than just live. I’d gotten invited twice to join him for dinner; the second time ending in a
night that still haunted me even now.
I swallowed, turning my attention to Elias who was still hanging around me, waiting for a
review. “You drew him again.” I finally commented.

Elias nodded, beaming. “He came to my dream! He wasn’t hunting the bad guys this time. He
was looking for us.” My head snapped in his direction, my heart lurching in my chest. He was
looking for us? That scared me more than when I’d had the vision about him being bloodied in
battle. My throat felt tight. I must have nodded or hummed or given him some kind of
response because he just smiled before returning to his spot on the floor and picking up his
coloring from where he’d left off.
I pushed from the small sofa, heading into the kitchen where Mara was quietly sorting herbs
into little labeled jars. The second I walked in, she looked up, her gaze immediately landing on
the sketch in my hands. She sighed like she’d been expecting this. “He’s getting stronger,” she
murmured, going back to what she’d been doing like she was tired of talking about the same
thing repeatedly. Which she probably was. “His bond with Logan…it hasn’t dulled. It’s only
strengthening.”
I leaned against the counter, feeling winded. “It’s not just strengthening. It’s getting out of
hand. First drawings, and now dreams…he feels him, Mara.”
“And you’re scared.”
Of course I was. But I would never say it. She set the jar down, wiped her hands, and gave me
that look. The type of look she used when she was about to tell me something I wouldn’t want
to hear. “You need to stop pretending he’s just going to forget, Sienna. He’s not. You’ve told
him his father is away fighting to keep him safe. But maybe it’s time to tell him the truth…or
at least… closer to it.”
I shook my head, clutching the sketch to my chest. “What? What exactly am I supposed to tell
him, Mara? That his father sent us away? That he chose a kingdom over us?” My voice broke.
“That it’s been a whole five years and not once has he come looking for us?” I couldn’t help
raising my voice at the end. “Or maybe you’re forgetting the invitation he sent out weeks ago
for his choosing ceremony.”
Mara didn’t cave. “No, I haven’t. But I think you’re forgetting you have more than yourself to
think about now,” I flinched at her words. “This is about Elias and the fact that you’re keeping

him away from his father and stripping him of a lot of privileges. You don’t even need to tell
Logan about him if you truly don’t want to, but maybe you could tell Elias his father is going
to be gone longer than expected. That he’s not coming home tomorrow or next week. That you
don’t know when-or if-he will.”
The truth in her words scraped so much, I simply turned on my heels and silently stormed
into my room. Later that evening, after Elias had eaten and changed into his favorite pajamas,
I found him sprawled on the floor, adding more trees around Logan’s drawn figure. I sat beside him, brushing his curls back gently. “Hey,” I said. His big amber eyes met mine. “About your
dad…”
I immediately had all his attention.
I forced a smile. “Remember how I told you he’s off hunting the bad guys?”
He nodded.
“Well,” I paused, “it turns out…it’s going to take longer than we thought. A lot longer.”
His expression faltered, a small frown settling over his face. “Like…how long?”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I don’t know, baby. But it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care,
okay?”
He nodded slowly, quieter than usual. “Okay.”
I kissed his forehead, hugging him tightly to myself. We were going to be fine.
We had to be.
