The Lucan Marked Me - Chapter (36)

Chapter 36

The maps weren’t helping.
I’d been staring at them for the better part of an hour, retracing every step we’d taken over
the past weeks. Every red mark, every territory combed through. I’d told Kael we needed to
take some time to strategize before we raided the remaining three packs, but deep down I
knew it wasn’t the only truth. I also wanted to brace myself for how I would deal with the
situation if I didn’t find Sienna in any of the packs.
Or if I did.

I trusted Kael and Cassian’s commitment to tasks. If they raided the neighbouring packs, save
for three, and hadn’t found Bruce or Sienna yet, it meant we only had three chances until our
hope was snuffed. I leaned forward, planting both hands on the table. My arms ached. So did
my head. I usually appreciated the quiet, but today it was almost too much to bear.
As if on cue, a knock landed against the door. I gave whoever it was permission to come in,
and a few seconds later, Nessa waltzed in. Nessa was seeking me out? I suddenly preferred the
drowning silence more. Nessa never sought me personally unless it was to deliver some harsh
truth. Her boots came into view beside the table. “I figured you’d be in here,” she said.
“Maurie said she’s not seen you since this morning when you had breakfast.” Maurie, of course,
was my housekeeper. She was also the one I’d placed in charge of all the palace servants.
“I’m working.” I replied curtly.
“Is that what we’re calling it?”
I finally looked at her. Her hair was a mess, pulled up with half a leather tie, and there was
dirt on her boots. I quickly guessed she was probably just returning from training. Or tracking.
I exhaled through my nose, leaning into my seat. “What do you want, Nessa?”

Chapter 36
“To talk,” she said simply.

I had a feeling I knew exactly what she wanted to talk about. The shift in my chest was almost
immediate at the thought of the woman in question. I stared at the blank corner of the last
map I’d been about to mark before Nessa had knocked. If she brought up Sienna, I wasn’t sure
how I was going to react. I was definitely fucking tired of going on and on about a situation
that was out of my control. I was simply going to have to cross that bridge when I got there.
When, not before.
Nessa crossed her arms and looked down at the maps. “Cassian said you’ve already planned
out raids for the last three packs.”
“I have.”
“Still hoping to find Bruce, or…?”
I met her eyes. “Or.”
She nodded slowly, studying me like she was still deciding if she was going to push. “Can I ask
something?” she said.
I dropped down the marker in my hand, not bothering to hide my irritation any longer. “Do I
have a choice?”
“Not really.” Her smile was faint. “What are you going to do if you find her?”
“I don’t know.”
“Logan-”
“She’s an Omega, Nessa,” I snapped. “Even if I want her-if I can’t stop wanting her-it
doesn’t change the fact that the pack won’t accept her. I hardly think the elders would accept
her to be Queen either.”

Chapter 36
:
“And whose problem is that?” she pushed gently. “Theirs? Or yours?”
77
I shook my head. There was no use discussing this with Nessa-she clearly didn’t get just how
much was at stake here. None of them actually did. I watched as she took a step forward.
“You’ve spent years training your warriors to fight until their last breath. You’ve taught the
Inner Circle to lead, taught every young wolf in this kingdom what it means to be strong-and
now you’re going to act like your own mate isn’t good enough because of her rank?”
“It’s not about being good enough,” I said quietly.
“Then what is it about?”
I stared at the map again. “I chose the kingdom over her once. If I choose her now, and
everything falls apart, that’s on me. You have no idea how much of a tough decision that is to
make.”
Nessa’s voice dropped. “Maybe you’re looking at it wrongly by separating her from the
kingdom. Maybe the goddess gave you her to stop it from falling apart.” The more she carried
on, the more I was convinced she was being more sentimental than logical, and therefore the
worst person I could possibly be having this conversation with. I stood up and moved to the
window. Outside, the warriors were training in the courtyard. The same sparring rounds we
cycled through every day, keeping everyone sharp for the fight we now knew was coming.
I watched two of them circle each other, teeth bared in gritted focus, neither holding back.
Nessa let the silence stretch for a beat, then another. “Tell me something.”
I didn’t turn around.
“If you found her tomorrow,” she asked, “and she’d already moved on, already had someone
else-what would you do?”
“I’d kill him,” I said without thinking.

Chapter 36
When I turned back to her, she didn’t look surprised. Just sad. We both knew I wasn’t joking.
“Then go find her before it’s too late.”
77
She headed for the door, pausing for a spell. “If you do…make her your queen. And if anyone
has a problem with it, let them challenge you for the crown.” Then she was gone. I stood there
a while longer, staring at the map, and considering the possibility she would be in one of the
three packs left.
No, praying to the goddess that she was.
