It was almost noon when Elias and I began making our way to the academy. Logan had given
his directions to the academy and despite his insistence, I’d managed to convince him there
was no point having his warriors keep an eye on our every move. I hadn’t forgotten about the
threat notes, but I couldn’t deny that staying here, I felt significantly… safer.
Elias bounced around beside me, a mixture of excitement and nerves. I have his hand a little
squeeze, drawing his gaze to mine before offering him a small smile. The academy came into
view, the building a lot more expansive and fancy than the academy at Mara’s pack. I slanted a
look at Elias, watching the look of awe on his face as he took in the large building. His hold on
my hand tightened as we headed towards the entrance.
One of the Lycans watching the building bowed subtly before gesturing for us to walk in. He
must have guessed I was here because of Elias because he whispered something to some other
warrior and then he motioned for us to come with him. Now fully inside the building, the
corridors buzzed with activity, students moving between classes, laughter echoing off the
walls. A staff member greeted us warmly, picking up from the warrior and directing us to
Elias’s designated classroom.
Elias clutched my hand a little tighter, and I squeezed back, offering silent encouragement.
The woman in charge of Elias’s class seemed friendly enough. She introduced herself as Maya.
She had short dark hair with colourful streaks. Her eyes lit up with excitement and she lightly
stated how honoured she was to be a part of the pack’s heir’s training.
As Elias scanned his gaze round his class, Maya took the time to explain the placement tests
he had to undertake. I sat nearby, watching as he took the seat she offered him and
immediately got to work. It didn’t take long for me to notice a small group of students
gathering around Elias, who had just completed his tests. They seemed fascinated with him,
and to my surprise, Elías easily engaged with them.

My heart warmed at the sight; at how easily he had gotten over his initial apprehensiveness. I
turned back to Maya, a smile tugging at my lips. “I think I’ll wait outside for a bit, I told her.
She nodded, understanding I wanted to give Elias room to get used to the academy without
my lingering presence. Maya emerged from the building minutes later, a proud smile on her
face, with Elias walking beside her, clutching his test results.
She handed me the papers, and as I scanned through the impressive scores, a swell of pride
warmed my chest. Elias looked up at me, eyes gleaming with excitement. “I think I’m ready to
start, he announced heartily. I crouched down and enveloped him in a warm hug, brushing a
strand of hair from his forehead.
“I’m so proud of you,” I whispered in his ears. Rising back to my full height, I shot Maya
another warm smile. “We’ll be back in a couple of days,” I informed her. She nodded, giving
Elias a high-five and letting him know she couldn’t wait for him to join the rest of the class.
She assured me she would keep an eye on him and make sure he was safe and it was the final
thing I needed to hear to finally be at ease.
This would work.
Everything was going to be fine.
As we left the academy grounds, Elias chatted excitedly about the kids who had talked to him
and how excited they’d mentioned they were to have him in the academy. His enthusiasm was
infectious, and I found myself smiling more than I had in days. I decided to take a stop at the
pack, letting Elias run around and play with the swings while I settled on a nearby bench.
The sound of footsteps had me turning, and I caught sight of Nessa walking up to me. “Hey,”
she greeted smiling, as she lowered herself beside me on the bench. I smiled at her in turn, but didn’t say a word. Her smile slipped a little before she fixed it. “I should probably
apologize,” she said cautiously. “For how we’d treated you years ago.” She clarified at the look
of confusion on my face. “I’m really sorry about that.”
I tilted my head as I studied her, realizing she genuinely meant it. Even though a part of me

wondered if she was only apologizing because of how much the table had turned; with me
having Logan’s heir and all, I decided to simply just let it go. Surely no good would come from
dwelling on it. I waved my hand dismissively in the air. “It’s fine, thank you.” I gave her a small
smile so she knew I was also being sincere. “Your loyalties were-are-with Logan, so I
completely understand.”
We sat in comfortable silence for a while, until I called out to Elias that it was time to head
home. As we prepared to leave, Nessa stood and offered another small smile. “If you ever need
anything, don’t hesitate to ask,” she said. I watched her walk away, a small sense of respect
settling in my chest. She’d been the second person to properly apologize for how I’d been
treated.
Logan being the first.
Perhaps people could change, and perhaps, just perhaps, I could find a place here after all.
Elias ran up to me, his cheeks flushed from jumping around. Maurie had gotten started on
dinner by the time we arrived at the mansion. I gently gave Elias a nudge to go have a bath
while I joined Mara in the kitchen. She handed me an apron, taking in the expression on my
face. “Have a good day?” She asked conversationally.
I heaved a sigh, nodding. “Yeah, Elias thankfully likes the academy, so he should be getting
started anytime soon.” She smiled, stirring the sauce in the pot. Because she reminded me so
much of Mara, I remembered I hadn’t tried to communicate with Mara since we arrived at the
pack.
Following her lead as we cooked, I made a mental note to inform Logan I wanted to send Mara
a message when he got back.
