I walked toward Ashwood Pack with my suitcase in hand, taking in the breathtaking surroundings as I
went.
The pack was beautiful. Everything looked carefully maintained, from the enormous houses to the
neatly trimmed gardens and the wide paths winding through the territory. Even the air felt different
here-quieter somehow.
A smile tugged at my lips.
Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
As I approached the house, two guards stopped me. They checked my belongings while several
enormous wolves circled around me, sniffing carefully before stepping back. The security was tighter
than I expected, especially considering this wasn’t even Lucian’s actual pack.
Blackwood was his home.
At least, that was what I knew.
I couldn’t help wondering why he preferred staying outside his pack. He had access to all of this-
luxurious houses, beautiful grounds, enough space to make anyone feel like royalty-yet he’d chosen
to live away from his own pack.
Still, it wasn’t my business.
Once the guards finished their inspection, they finally allowed me through. I stopped in front of the
enormous front door and let out a quiet breath, my shoulders relaxing.
Starting today, I would be living here.
A fresh start.
The thought alone made me smile.
I entered the password and pushed open the door.
The house was just as beautiful on the inside. Spacious, elegant, and almost too quiet. I carried my shopping bags upstairs and placed them in the master bedroom’s walk-in closet, pausing when I spotted the hair accessory Celine had practically fought me over earlier.
I smiled at the memory before slipping it into place.

For once, I didn’t have to worry about her taking it.

After changing into my pajamas, I tied an apron around my waist and headed downstairs.
The kitchen was spotless
And, more importantly, empty.
No maids hovering around. No one watching over my shoulder. No one asking questions or running to
report everything I did.
I breathed out slowly.
I could get used to this.
I checked the food on the stove, and the rich aroma of spaghetti and meatballs immediately made my
stomach rumble. It was simple, but it was one of those meals that never failed.
Once everything was ready, I served myself a plate and sat down at the dining table.
I had barely taken my first bite when the front door opened.
My fork paused halfway to my mouth.
Lucian walked in.
He was dressed almost entirely in black, his usual gloves covering his hands. The dark clothes only seemed to emphasize the sharp lines of his face-the sculpted jaw, straight nose, and striking
features that somehow made his naturally cold expression even more intimidating.
He was ridiculously attractive.
My heart gave an embarrassing little skip.
Karla stirred somewhere inside me, suddenly alert.
I ignored her.
Instead, I offered Lucian a warm smile.
“Oh, you’re back just in time. I just finished cooking. You can join me if you want.”
His gaze settled on me.
Something unreadable flickered through his deep, dark eyes, but his expression remained as
composed as ever.

He didn’t answer.
He simply stared.
For a few seconds, neither of us said anything.

The longer he looked at me, the more awkward I became. I shifted slightly in my chair, suddenly very
aware of myself.
He was the one who had offered to let me stay here. And after everything I’d learned about him, I
trusted him enough not to question his intentions.
Still, that stare was making it difficult to relax.
I cleared my throat and looked back down at my plate.
Ever since that rainy night, things between Lucian and me had changed.
He’d noticed that I didn’t want to go home, but he’d never pushed me to explain why, I was grateful for
that. Eventually, I’d mentioned that I was looking for somewhere to stay.
Somewhere to rent.
When he’d shown me this place, I’d immediately known I couldn’t afford it.
And I wasn’t exactly in a position to waste money.
Being Evander’s daughter and Logan’s mate might have sounded impressive to everyone else, but
neither title had given me the financial freedom I needed.
Besides, I knew I would eventually unbind myself from Logan. There was no point throwing away what little money I had.
So, when I admitted that I couldn’t afford the rent, Lucian surprised.
“If you’re willing to bring me something to eat whenever you’re cooking, I’ll rent the house to you for a thousand a month,” he’d said. “You don’t have to wait for me to eat with you. I’m used to eating alone, and home-style dishes are fine.”
I’d stared at him.
It was probably the longest sentence he’d spoken since we’d met.
“You’re not picky about food, are you?” I’d asked.
“I’m not picky.”

“Then it’s settled. Do we need to sign a contract? How do I pay the rent? How much is the deposit, and how much do I need to pay in advance?”
A flicker of surprise had crossed his eyes, as though he hadn’t expected me to agree so quickly.
“One month’s deposit and three months’ rent in advance.”
Three months was manageable.
I had smiled and paid him immediately.
I never asked why he was willing to rent such a huge house to me for so little. I didn’t ask why he’d
trusted that I could cook either.
Those questions didn’t matter.
All that mattered was that I’d found somewhere I could stay without having to return to Logan and
Celine.
And honestly?
This place was better than I could have imagined.
I blinked, pulling myself back to the present.
Lucian had already taken the seat across from me
He picked up his fork and began eating quietly.
I watched him for a moment before smiling.
“How’s the food?”
He continued eating for a few seconds before finally answering.
“Good.”
“Good?” I repeated, amused.
I couldn’t tell whether he genuinely liked it or was simply being polite.
Either way, I wasn’t going to complain.
We ate in comfortable silence until we were finished.
I stood and began gathering the plates, carrying them toward the kitchen. Lucian followed behind me.
I reached for the sink, but before I could turn on the tap, his hand closed around my wrist.

His grip wasn’t painful, but the suddenness of it caught me off guard. I looked up at him, raising an
eyebrow.
Lucian immediately released me.
His brows drew together slightly.
“I can do it myself,” he said.
His deep voice was calm, almost magnetic.
“But you rented the house to me so cheaply-”
“Washing dishes wasn’t part of the contract.”
He stepped past me.
“So it isn’t something you’re required to do.”
Before I could respond, he gathered the remaining dishes and carried them to the sink.
I stood there, watching as the Alpha of Blackwood calmly washed his own dishes, rinsed them, and placed them aside.
Then he dried his hands and walked away as if nothing unusual had happened.
I blinked.
Wow.
I’d expected many things from an Alpha.
Washing his own dishes wasn’t one of them.
Then again, I hadn’t known Logan was good at household chores either until I’d once seen him helping
Naya slice fruits in the healers’ den.
Maybe anyone could learn to do anything when they actually chose to.
A small smile crossed my face.
I washed my own hands and followed him toward the living room, but by the time I stepped out, he
was already heading toward the stairs.
“Are you going to sleep now?” I asked.

Lucian stopped and glanced back at me.
“Yes.”
I smiled faintly.
“Goodnight, Alpha Lucian.”

His dark eyes lingered on me for a moment before he gave a slight nod and continued upstairs.
I watched him disappear before letting out a quiet sigh.
I noticed him lift his phone to his ear as he walked. I couldn’t make out what he was saying, and I
didn’t bother trying to listen.
I returned to the couch and checked my phone for a while before finally turning it off.
The house fell silent again.
I closed my eyes for a moment before getting up and heading toward my room.
As I walked, my thoughts returned to Logan.
I needed to find a way to help him rise to the top.
It was proving to be much harder than I’d expected/
But the sooner I succeeded, the sooner I could finally break this mating bond.
And the sooner I could walk away.
The next morning, I woke up early and got ready to leave, only to find that Lucian had already left.
We hadn’t even crossed paths.
I was staying in the master bedroom because Lucian had pointed out that it came with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. Although it was technically his house, having the room to myself stik gave me a sense of privacy. At least I could shower, change, and get dressed without worrying about
anyone walking in.
As I walked downstairs, something on the kitchen table caught my attention.
A carton of milk.
A loaf of bread.

And a bar of chocolate.
I stopped beside the table, staring at thern for a moment.
My eyes narrowed slightly
Had Lucian left these for me?
I wasn’t sure, but there wasn’t anyone else in the house who could have done it.
A small smile tugged at my lips.

I checked the time. I still had enough time to make something proper, but the thought of cooking first
thing in the morning made me sigh.
I could have gone to a restaurant or grabbed breakfast from a café on my way to work.
Instead, I poured myself a cup of tea, toasted the bread, and sat down at the table.
It was simple.
Yet somehow, it felt strangely thoughtful.
I couldn’t remember the last time someone had prepared breakfast for me.
In four years of being Logan’s mate, I had never woken up to find something waiting specifically for
- There had always been maids to handle the cooking, serving, and everything else.
And usually, I hadn’t minded.
But now, sitting alone at Lucian’s kitchen table with a cup of tea warming my hands, I realized how
much I’d gotten used to receiving nothing at all.
My phone sat beside my plate.
I glanced at it.
Not a single missed call.
Not one message.
Logan hadn’t even bothered to check where I had spent the night.
I let out a quiet scoff.
Of course he hadn’t.
Why would he?

He was probably too busy enjoying his time with Celine, playing happy little family while his actual mate spent the night somewhere else.
Karla gave a low, imitated snarl at the thought.
I rolled my eyes.
“Don’t remind me.”
I finished my breakfast, grabbed my bag, and headed for the door.
If Logan didn’t care where I was, I certainly wasn’t going to waste my morning caring about him.
