Chapter 23
AVA’S POINT OF VIEW
A flicker of unease crossed Celine’s face.
She opened her mouth, but Logan spoke before she could get a word out.

“I lent it to Celine,” he said calmly. “Today is Naya’s first day transitioning from kindergarten to Pup
Academy. Silvercrest Pup Academy is an elite academy, and Celine didn’t have anything suitable to
wear. I was worried she’d be looked down on if she showed up in something ordinary, so I took the liberty of lending her your limited-edition outfit.”
His eyes settled on me.
“I’m sorry. I should have told you first.”
For a moment, I simply stared at him.
The outfit.
The one he had given me for our anniversary.
The one I had carefully put away because, to me, it had meant more than the ridiculous price tag
attached to it.
Logan reached beneath the table, seemingly intending to take my hand.
I moved before his fingers could reach mine.
My hand slipped toward the fruit plate instead, and I picked up a slice of watermelon as though that
had been my intention all along.
Logan’s brows drew together.
Celine lowered her gaze.
“I’m sorry, Ava,” she said softly. “Even if Logan asked me to wear it, I shouldn’t have. Especially since
it’s such an expensive limited-edition outfit.”
“It’s fine.”
I smiled at her.
Then I pushed my plate aside slightly and looked directly at her.
“You can have it.”

Celine’s head snapped up.
Even Logan looked genuinely stunned.
“Ava…”

“Didn’t Dad just say I didn’t give Naya & gift for her transition to Pup Academy?” I asked lightly. “There’s no time to prepare something now, so I’ll just give her this. It doesn’t matter whether I give it to Naya or Celine.”
I picked up my fork and continued eating, my expression relaxed enough to make it impossible to tell
whether I meant every word,
“Besides, Celine clearly likes it.”
Logan stared at me.
I could see the discomfort settling across his face.
He knew exactly what that outfit meant.
He had chosen it for me himself.
And now I had handed it to another woman without even putting up a fight.
Because he’d used his own hands to give it to her, so she could keep it.
For all I care. I couldn’t care less about the dress anymore.
“That’s more like it,” Dad said from beside me. “That’s how a sister-in-law should act.”
Logan’s expression tightened.
Originally, he had probably never intended for Celine to actually keep it.
But I had made the decision for him.
“Ava,” he began carefully, “how about we give Naya something else instead?”
“No.”
I smiled at him.
“I’ve already given it to her. How could I take it back now?”
My gaze briefly shifted toward Dad.
“Besides, Dad just praised me for doing the right thing.”

The silence between us lasted only a few seconds before he casually changed the subject.
“By the way, Ava, you haven’t been home for several nights. Are you planning to stay out tonight too?”
My fork stopped halfway to my mouth.
Before I could answer, Dad’s expression changed.
“What?”
His eyes moved sharply toward Logan.
“You haven’t been home for several nights?”
Logan’s face shifted.
“Dad, Ava secured a big deal for the pack. She’s probably just been busy with work lately…”
His explanation sounded uncertain even to my ears.
Dad clearly wasn’t convinced.
“Ava, that’s enough!” he snapped. “No matter how busy you are with work, a mated woman shouldn’t
be staying out all night. Are you really working overtime at the packhouse, or are you out fooling
around in bars and clubs?”
I lowered my eyes to my plate.
So that was why Logan had insisted Dad come to dinner.
He wanted someone else to question me.
Someone who would pressure me into returning home.
Someone who would make me look like the unreasonable mate for choosing to stay away.
I finally understood.
If I didn’t go home, Logan and Celine could live comfortably under the same roof without constantly worrying about me walking in on them.
Their lives would be much easier if I remained the outsider.
“I haven’t been to any bar,” I said quietly.

Dad’s shoulders relaxed slightly.
But then I added,
“I haven’t been working overtime at the packhouse either.”
His relief vanished.
“What did you say?”
I turned my attention to Logan instead.
“Have you forgotten what Naya said about me?”
Logan went silent.
I waited.
He knew exactly what I was referring to.

“Naya said she didn’t want me taking care of her,” I reminded him. “She even called me a bad aunt.”
The atmosphere around the table changed instantly.
Naya’s little body stiffened.
She looked from me to Logan, and the color slowly drained from her face. Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry, Aunty. I…”
“She’s just a child,” Dad interrupted. “Why are you blaming her?”
I shook my head gently.
“I’m not blaming her, Dad.”
My voice remained calm.
“That’s exactly why I stay away.”
Dad frowned.
“You’ve misunderstood. Everything I’m doing is for Naya’s sake.”
I glanced toward the little girl.
“As the saying goes, two tigers cannot share one mountain. A house cannot comfortably accommodate two women fighting for the same place. Naya is still young. It’s perfectly normal for her

to dislike having someone other than her mother living in her home and interfering with her life.”
Naya’s lower lip trembled.
I continued before anyone could interrupt.
“Now that she’s starting her transition from kindergarten to Pup Academy, she needs stability. She
needs to feel comfortable in her own home.”
I paused, then looked toward Logan.
“And apparently, she feels more comfortable when I’m not around.”
Logan’s jaw tightened.
“So I stay at a hotel near the packhouse. It’s convenient for me because I can return whenever I need
to handle pack affairs, and Naya gets to have the environment she wants.”
I gave a small shrug.
“It’s a win-win situation.”
I didn’t mention the other reason.
As Luna, I couldn’t simply spend every night at the packhouse without people starting to talk. If I stayed there too often, questions about Logan would follow.
And I had no intention of becoming the subject of pack gossip.
Logan looked increasingly flustered.
“Ava, you’re the only lady of my home. Celine and Naya are only staying there temporarily.”
I glanced at Celine.
>
She was staring at Logan with an unmistakable mixture of disappointment and resentment.
Naya had lowered her head.
I smiled faintly.
“But our household registrations are together.”
My fingers tightened around my fork.
“How about I move mine out?”
“Nonsense!”

The sharp sound echoed through the private dining room, and the conversations from the surrounding tables seemed to fade into the background.
I looked at him calmly.
Now I was certain.
No matter what happened, Dad would never agree to my unbinding from Logan unless I could put
undeniable evidence in front of him.
The table fell silent.
I was the first to break it.
“I’m only trying to be considerate of my mate and my niece.”
Then I picked up my fork and continued eating as if nothing had happened.
Logan noticed Dad’s furious gaze fixed on him.
His expression changed immediately.
“Ava, don’t worry,” he said. “Once Naya finishes her transition courses, I’ll transfer Celine and Naya’s
household registrations out.”
Celine’s head jerked up.
Her mouth opened.
Before she could say anything, Logan shifted his leg beneath the table.
A warning.
Celine immediately closed her mouth.
The resentment in her eyes deepened.
Naya seemed to sense the tension too. She obediently lowered her head and continued eating, though
every now and then she peeked at me from beneath her lashes.
I pretended not to notice.
Instead, I concentrated on my meal.
In fact, I ate more than anyone else at the table.

Perhaps because every bite gave me something to do besides react to the uncomfortable silence
surrounding me.
Then Logan’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen before answering.
Because I was sitting close enough, I could make out fragments of the conversation.
Pack herbs.
Healers.
Something was wrong at the packhouse.
I watched Logan’s expression change as he listened.
The relaxed mask disappeared from his face.
A few moments later, he ended the call and immediately stood.
I looked up at him.
“What’s wrong, honey?”
I deliberately made my voice sweet.
Logan froze.
His eyes shifted toward Celine.
The resentment in his gaze was impossible to miss.
I lowered my fork.
So that was it.
I already knew what had happened.
But I widened my eyes and tilted my head innocently.
“What?”
