Chapter 8

LOGAN’S POINT OF VIEW

Ava didn’t even lift her head. She continued eating as though the question meant nothing.

“Just a friend.”

Just a friend.

The words should have settled something inside me, but instead they lodged beneath my ribs like a

thorn.

Our families had known each other for years. Their circle and mine overlapped in more ways than I

could count, and even after Ava had walked away from the pack four years ago, I still knew enough

about the people in her life to recognize every name that mattered.

There had never been a Lucian.

Not once.

So who was the man sending her food?

My wolf stirred uneasily beneath my skin, pacing in restless circles, while a bitter taste settled at the back of my throat. I couldn’t explain why it bothered me so much. I shouldn’t have cared. Yet the thought of another man doing something so simple for Ava left an unpleasant heaviness in my chest,

as though I’d swallowed poison.

Dinner ended not long after, and Ava and I prepared to leave my mother’s house together.

Celine held Naya’s tiny hand while balancing several containers of leftovers in the other. She had

refused them more than once, but my mother insisted until she finally gave in.

Ava, on the other hand, looked completely relaxed. The tightness she’d carried during dinner had

disappeared, replaced by a quiet contentment that somehow irritated me even more.

The four of us squeezed into the elevator.

“Uncle…carry me.”

Naya’s sleepy little voice echoed through the confined space as she reached both arms toward me.

Thankfully, Celine had already taught her to call me “Uncle” whenever we were outside.

Normally, I would have picked her up without hesitation.

Tonight, I didn’t move.

My thoughts were still trapped on a name.

Lucian.

“Naya,” I said. “You’re a big girl now. You can’t ask to be carried every single time.”

I saw the surprise flash across Celine’s face as she glanced at me.

She was watching me strangely.

It was the first time I had ever ignored Naya when she reached for me, asking to be carried.

Usually, I never hesitated. The moment her little arms stretched toward me, I would pick her up without

a second thought. But today, something inside me felt different.

I didn’t have the patience.

I wasn’t in the mood.

“Yes, Naya,” she continued, forcing a smile. “He’s your uncle, not your father. Don’t be so naughty.”

The words landed like a slap.

My jaw tightened.

As if dealing with this mysterious Lucian wasn’t enough, now I was being silently judged for refusing

to carry my own daughter.

“Logan,” Ava said softly, her voice breaking through the suffocating silence. “She’s your niece. Just

give carry her.”

For some reason, hearing Ava say it loosened the knot in my chest.

I forced a smile.

“You’re right.”

I bent down and lifted Naya into my arms, but she only pouted, clearly upset that I’d hesitated in the first place. Beside us, Celine’s expression remained stiff.

The moment the elevator doors opened, I set Naya back on the ground.

Ava walked ahead with empty hands, her pace unhurried.

“Ava.”

The light makeup on her face couldn’t hide how calm she looked. There wasn’t the slightest trace of anger from everything my mother had done tonight.

“What happened at dinner…” I began quietly. “My mother went too far.”

She looked at me, pretending not to understand.

“What do you mean?”

“The food… all the ginger.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“Your mother didn’t do it on purpose. She probably forgot I don’t eat ginger.”

I blinked.

She was… defending my mother?

For a moment, I couldn’t find the words.

For the four years we had been mated, I had never once shared a true bond with Ava.

I had never touched her the way a mate should. Never marked her sexually, never allowed our connection to deepen beyond the fragile thread that tied us together.

I kept my distance, always finding a reason to hold back.

And all this time, I knew she noticed.

Ava wasn’t foolish. She must have spent countless nights wondering why her own mate kept her at

arm’s length. She must have questioned whether something was wrong with her, or worse-whether

something was wrong with me.

Yet she never demanded answers.

She never cornered me, never forced me to explain the secrets I kept buried. She never challenged my pride or pushed me into a position where I would have to admit what I wasn’t ready to face.

Looking back now, I realized how much restraint that must have taken.

Beneath the calm expression she wore and the sharp words she used, Ava had always been more considerate than I gave her credit for.

And instead of tearing them apart, she quietly protected them-even when I was the one hurting her.

“Ava.

Before I could say another word, Celine hurried over with Naya.

“Brother, are you two heading home?” she asked. “Can you give us a ride? I didn’t bring my car. You brought us here, and Naya can’t shift yet.”

I nodded automatically before turning back to Ava.

“What about you?”

“I’m not going home.”

The answer caught me off guard.

“I’ll stay at Nyxelle’s tonight.”

My expression darkened instantly.

Even my wolf let out a low growl.

Nyxelle.

I had never liked that woman.

She always filled Ava’s head with ridiculous ideas, encouraging her to question me, to argue with me, to become more independent than a Luna should be. She ran a clothing boutique, but she’d also accepted money Ava secretly took from the pack’s emergency funds to help keep her business afloat.

I had warned Ava about her countless times.

She never listened.

We’d argued over Nyxelle so often that eventually I’d given up mentioning her name altogether.

I stared at Ava, disappointment simmering beneath my skin.

She was beautiful.

She came from a respected family.

She could have surrounded herself with influential people.

Instead, she always insisted on keeping the wrong company.

“Come on, Celine,” I muttered. “Let’s go.”

At the roadside, our paths split.

Ava headed west.

The three of us walked east.

Twice, I looked back.

Twice, she never turned around.

She never even slowed down.

Something about that unsettled my wolf more than I wanted to admit.

The drive home was painfully quiet.

Celine barely spoke.

Naya had fallen asleep halfway there, her tiny head resting against the window.

When we arrived, I carried her upstairs myself and tucked her into the bed in the master bedroom.

Ever since Celine and Naya moved in, I’d given them me and Ava’s room.

Without anyone interrupting us, Celine and I finally had the privacy we’d wanted.

After closing the bedroom door quietly, I reached for Celine’s hand.

She jerked away before I could touch her.

“Don’t.”

I frowned.

“What’s wrong?”

She laughed bitterly.

“You really have to ask?”

When she looked up, her eyes were already red.

“Logan… I never realized you could be such a scumbag.”

Her words struck harder than I expected.

“You told me we weren’t siblings. You said you loved me. You convinced me to have your child.” Her voice trembled with every sentence. “Four years, Logan. Four years, and Naya and I still have no name.

No status.”

She stepped closer, tears spilling freely now.

“You still haven’t divorced Ava.”

I frowned.

“I’ve never chosen her over you.”

“You still won’t admit it?”

Her shoulders shook.

“The bracelet you gave me… wasn’t that the one Ava took back?”

I stayed silent.

“You promised I’d become Luna after everything settled.”

Silence.

“Or have you changed your mind?” she cried. “Do you regret never touching her? Is that why you’re thinking about giving her a child now?”

Question after question crashed into me until my head throbbed.

“What are you talking about?”

I pulled her into my arms before she could step away again.

“I never had a choice.”

My voice was firm.

“Everything I’ve done has been for the pack… for my position… for our future.”

I held her tighter.

“Celine… ever since the day you saved my life, you’ve been the only woman I’ve loved.”

That much had always been true.

“But Ava’s family isn’t ordinary. Her father, Evander, is one of the biggest reasons this pack became what it is today. Walking away from that overnight would destroy everything I’ve worked for.”

I rested my forehead against hers.

“I know you’ve suffered. I know Naya has too. That’s why I’ve been trying to make it up to both of you.

Bringing you here… letting Naya grow up in this pack… that’s only the beginning.”

My wolf quieted as I spoke, reassured by the future I’d already planned.

“I’m not powerful enough yet,” I admitted. “But once the pack rankings are announced and my position

is untouchable, l’Ilunbind Ava.”

I cupped her face.

“I’ll give you the title of Luna.”

I brushed my lips against her ear and whispered,

“I’ll even buy you another bracelet. One far more expensive than the one Ava ever had.”

I smiled.

“And this time… I’ll keep my promise.”

The words were still in the air when I slid my hand under the hem of Celine’s skirt.

I looked back at her. She didn’t pull away. She didn’t say no.

So I went further. My fingers found the edge of her underwear and I hooked them, dragging them down

slow. The fabric caught, then gave.

Heat. Wet.

She was already open for me.

I pushed one finger in and her breath hitched. The sound went straight to my chest. I kept going, drawing her out, feeling her clench around me with every pull.
