Chapter 7
The next morning, Shepherd delivered the shawl to Iceland.
When the package was opened, I stood frozen for a long time. The moonwhite fabric had been washed wrinkled. At the corner, the crooked red thread my mother had sewn with her own hands- was broken. The break was very fresh, as though someone had yanked it in a hurry.
Along with the package came that old wooden chest. Inside, one earring was missing.
I stared at the empty space where it should have been, my eyes stinging fiercely. That pair of earrings had been the ones my mother wore before her very last time on stage. Later, in order to pay for Julian’s acting classes, I’d sold off most of her keepsakes, keeping only this one pair. Now only one was left.
I texted Shepherd: The other one?
Ten minutes later, he replied: Mr. Pierce’s side says Ms. Iris lost it inadvertently during filming. They are searching for it.
I stared at that line of text and looked at it for a very long time. So even after a heart has died completely, it can still hurt. Not for Julian. For the girl who once held out every precious thing she had and offered it all to him.
That afternoon, I went to the seaside. Iceland’s wind was brutal. I spread the shawl across my knees and, stitch by stitch, sewed the broken thread firmly back together.
Beside me, a young girl recognized me. She hesitated for a long time before she finally asked in a small voice, “Are you Nora?”
I lifted my head. Her eyes were red. She handed me her phone. “Julian posted.”
On the screen was a photo of a chestnut cake. The caption was only one line: Come home. I’ll be
waiting.
The comment section was full of people aching for him. [He’s so devoted.] [Nora, stop being so difficult-he’s already bowed his head.] [What’s eight years of companionship worth anyway? The guy’s willing to comfort you-that’s already pretty good.]
I handed the phone back to her. The girl bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I used to trash you, too. But today I came across those old clarification posts you wrote for him back then-I realized every single one was signed with your email initials.”

I smiled. “It’s okay.”
She looked even sadder. “You’re really not going back, are you?”
I lowered my head and pulled the final stitch taut. “No.”
That evening, Julian arrived in Iceland. He couldn’t reach me, so he could only find the hotel I’d booked. The front desk refused to give out guest information, so he sat in the lobby for an entire night.
On the morning of the third day, I came back from outside and saw him standing at the hotel entrance. He was dressed far too lightly. His black coat was covered in fallen snow, his face so pale he looked barely alive.
The instant he saw me, a faint light flickered to life in his eyes. “Nora.”
I stopped walking.
He came toward me, holding in his hands a chestnut cake that had frozen solid. “I couldn’t find the shop you used to love. So I just bought the closest thing I could find.”
I looked at that cake and suddenly remembered all those years ago-I’d kept him company, waiting on set in the middle of winter. The winter had been so cold. We could only afford one tiny slice of cake. He’d dug out the only piece of chestnut and placed it in my palm, saying, “When I have money
in the future, every year I’ll buy you the biggest one.”
Later, he did have money. And he forgot.
Julian held the cake out in front of me, his voice so low it practically trembled. “Happy birthday.”
I didn’t take it. “Julian. My birthday has already passed.”
His eyes reddened instantly. “Then let me make it up to you.”
I looked at him calmly. “Some things can’t be made up.”
