Chapter 9
I tuned him out.
Dropped into a crouch and scooped the oranges off the pavement, one by one, back into the bag.
Then I looked up.
“Considerate of what? I played the good daughter for eighteen years. I finally picked an academy I actually want. Where’s the
crime in that?”
Declan’s mouth opened. Nothing came out.
His face went red. A finger jabbed at me.
“You’re selfish! Cold-blooded! Nobody ever liked you as a pup, and now you’re worse!”
“Cata can’t even focus on packing for the Healer Academy because of you. Can you sleep at night?”
That’s her problem.”
I hefted the bag and headed for the stairs without a backward glance.
“And next time you grab something of mine, I’m calling the enforcers.”
Declan shouted something at my back. He didn’t follow.
The third one was Grayson Lowe.
A rainy weekend.
I stepped out of the library, snapped my umbrella open, and there he was.
Standing in the downpour.
Grayson was soaked through, dark hair pasted flat against his forehead.
Those eyes that used to wreck me were bloodshot now, locked on my face.
“Clara.”
His voice came out shredded.
I froze on the step, watching him through the sheet of rain.
“Why did you block me? You’re not even gonna tell me why?”
He came closer, then flinched back as the water sluicing off my umbrella caught him.
“Explain what? Explain how you stomped all over me for Catalina’s sake?”
Calm, Flat.
Grayson dragged both hands through his soaked hair.
“Clara, I don’t get it. What did I do?”
“I didn’t know your rank back then. I thought you tested like normal. Is that really such a crime?”
A short laugh slipped out of me. “You never once asked what I ranked.”
“You couldn’t spare me a single sentence?”
He went quier Long, long quiet.
Then, rough: T’m sorry-I ignored you. I was wrong, Clara.”
“I was a total jerk. I always defaulted to Cata.”
“Because I figured you were strong enough. She was the one who needed protecting.
He stepped closer, voice cracking open.
“Come home with me. Please. I swear I’ll never put you second again.”
But the fire I used to feel for him was gone.
Cold ash. Dead ground.
I spoke low. The rain almost swallowed it.
“Grayson. You really think a few soft words and I’ll cry, melt, and follow you home like I used to?”
He blinked. “Clara, I mean it-”
“Your sincerity is cheap.”
I cut him clean.
Not a flicker in my eyes.
“And there’s something you still don’t get.”
“I didn’t leave to punish you. I didn’t leave hoping you’d chase me.”
“I left because I don’t need any of you anymore.”
His whole body locked up.
Rain rolled down his pale face like tears.
“Clara…”
“Go home, Grayson.”
I turned and walked straight into the rain.
Didn’t look back.
