Chapter 293 Harold’s Visit
Alpha Harold POV
The flight had been longer than I expected, although I had spent most of it staring at the same few messages on my phone.
Phina had sent me the hotel details twice, along with a reminder that she would be waiting when I arrived.
I had agreed to come the following week because refusing over the phone had seemed unnecessarily harsh.
Now that I was actually there, I wished I had found another excuse.
My wolf had been quiet for most of the flight. As the plane descended, he finally stirred.
“I don’t like this.”
“Neither do I.”
The airport was busy, and I moved through it with my security detail before heading to the hotel. I had barely spoken to anyone since landing. My mind kept returning to the call with Phina and the strange way she had asked me to come.
When I reached her room, she opened the door almost immediately.
For a second, I just stared.
She had dressed the way she used to when our marriage was still new.
Her hair was styled neatly, she wore the perfume I remembered, and even her clothes looked chosen with care. It was not how she usually looked when we met these days.
“You came,” she said.
“I said I would.”
She smiled and stepped aside.
“I know. I just wasn’t sure you would change your mind.”
I walked in.

The room was warm, clean, and filled with the smell of food. A table had been prepared near the window.

There were two plates, two glasses, and a bottle of wine opened.
I noticed the details because Phina had never been this organized about a meeting between us. She had even chosen the kind of food we used to order when we were newly married.
“You planned all this?”
“I wanted tonight to be nice.”
“It is.”
She studied my face for a moment.
“You don’t sound convinced.”
“I just got here.”
She nodded and moved toward the table, smoothing the front of her dress before sitting down.
“You cooked?”
“I ordered.”
“That sounds more like you.”
She laughed.
“I’ve missed you.”
I didn’t answer.
She came closer and touched my arm.
“You look tired.”
“It was a long flight.”
“You should eat.”
She was attentive in a way I hadn’t experienced from her in months.
Every question sounded normal, but there were too many of them, and she seemed to be watching for an answer each time. She asked about the trip, my pack, Magnus, and the tribunal. She listened without interrupting and refilled my glass before I needed to ask.
I noticed every bit of it. The problem was that I couldn’t figure out why she was doing it.

“You seem different,” I said eventually.
Her smile weakened.
“Is that bad?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You’re looking at me like you don’t recognize me.”
“I recognize you.”
She looked down at her plate.
“I’ve been thinking about us.”
I leaned back.
“About what?”
“How lonely I’ve been.”
She said it softly, almost casually.
“I spend most days alone. You have your responsibilities. I have mine. Sometimes I feel like I’ve lost the person I used to be.”
I listened.
She reached across the table and took my hand.
“I’ve missed being close to you.”
My wolf immediately became alert.
“Something is wrong.”
I didn’t move my hand.
Phina continued talking about the past, about our first months together and the way things had felt before everything between us became difficult. She remembered small things I had forgotten.
I answered when necessary, but I didn’t let myself get pulled into the conversation.
The scent reached me again.

I had noticed it when I first entered the room, but I had assumed it belonged to the hotel, her clothes, or someone who had passed through the corridor. Now it was stronger.
It wasn’t her scent.
It wasn’t mine.
I looked toward the door.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She watched me.
“You’ve gone quiet.”
“I’m tired.”
She smiled again.
“You always say that when you don’t want to talk.”
I ignored the comment.
My wolf kept circling the same thought.
“Someone else has been here.”
I frowned.
That was impossible to prove. Hotels had dozens of people moving through them every hour.
Still, the scent bothered me.
I stood after dinner.
“I should get some rest.”
“So soon?”
“Yes.”
She rose too.

“You don’t have to leave.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
Her expression softened.
“I thought maybe tonight could be different.”
I looked at her.
“Different how?”
She stepped closer.
“We could stop pretending we’re strangers.”
Her hand moved toward my chest.
I caught her wrist before she could touch me.
She froze.
I released her immediately.
“Harold?”
“Something feels wrong.”
Her face changed.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know yet.”
She stared at me.
“I invited you here because I missed you.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you treating me like I’ve done something?”
“Because I don’t understand what is happening.”
Her eyes became wet.

Chapter 293 Harold’s Visit
“I don’t understand you anymore.”
“That makes two of us.”
She turned away.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she wiped her cheek and looked back at me.
“I thought you wanted this.”
“I wanted to see you. That doesn’t mean I’m willing to pretend everything is fine.”
Her mouth tightened.
“I wasn’t asking you to pretend.”
“Then tell me why you suddenly feel the need to recreate the beginning of our marriage.”
She didn’t answer.
Her face showed hurt first.
Then anger.
Then sadness.
It changed so quickly that I almost missed the expression underneath all three.
Panic.
It lasted less than a second.
Then she looked down.
“I don’t know what you want from me.”
“I want the truth.”
“I’ve been honest.”
I watched her carefully.
My wolf was still restless.
“Don’t trust this.”

I didn’t.
I picked up my jacket from the chair.
“I’ll stay at another room.”
Her head snapped up.
“You’re leaving?”
“For tonight.”
“You came all this way just to walk away?”
“I came because you asked me to.”
She stared at me, and I could see that she wanted to say something.
Instead, she turned toward the window.
I walked to the door.
“Harold.”
I stopped.
When I looked back, she was no longer crying.
Her face was calm again.
“Goodnight.”
I nodded.
“Goodnight, Phina.”
I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me. The unfamiliar scent followed into the corridor.
This time, I knew I hadn’t imagined it.
