The investigation did not stop when we found the footage. If anything, it made me want to move faster.
I wanted to return to Stonehedge, get into the old medical district, search every room that still existed, and find out why my childhood had been divided into pieces.
I wanted Garret’s records, the facility files, the names of the doctors, guards, and anyone who had signed an order concerning Amara.
I wanted to know who had carried her out of that room, who had watched me stay behind, and why nobody had ever told me that I had a sister.
The recovered footage had changed everything. It was no longer a question of whether the memory was real. I had seen myself on that screen as a child. I had seen Amara beside me. There had been a time when we shared the same place, the same people, and apparently the
same secrets.
“I’m going back tonight,” I said.
Damian looked up from the security footage.
“No.”
I stared at him. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
My female wolf lifted her head. “He is serious.”
I ignored her.
Rhys and Cheryl were still working at the other end of the room. Amara sat with the healer, watching us without speaking.
Damian lowered his voice, but that did nothing to make me less angry.
“Your bloodline reacted twice today,” he said. “You nearly collapsed when you touched Amara’s mark. Then the network map responded to both of you.”
“I recovered.”
“That doesn’t mean you’re fine.”

“I didn’t say I was fine. I said I’m going.”
He stood.
The movement alone changed the room. His Alpha presence came forward before he seemed to notice it, pressing lightly against my wolf. She bristled.
“Damian.”
He pulled the aura back.
“I am not stopping the investigation,” he said. “I’m stopping you from walking into another old Stonehedge facility when we don’t know what that bloodline response is doing to you.”
“The mark reacted to me because it recognized me.”
“Maybe. Or maybe it reacted because your blood is changing.”
“My wolf can tell when something is wrong.”
“So can mine.”
That answer irritated me more than it should have.
“And you think keeping me here will fix that?”
“No. I think pushing until you collapse again won’t fix it either.”
I stepped closer.
“This is my history. My family. My sister. You don’t get to decide when I am allowed to face it.”
His eyes hardened.
“And you don’t get to decide that being willing to hurt yourself is the same thing as being strong.”
That stopped me.
For a second, neither of us spoke.
Then anger rose again.
“You always do this.”
“Do what?”

“Turn concern into permission. You decide where I go, who stays with me, how much I should know, when I should rest. You call it protection, but sometimes it feels like control.”
The words came out sharper than I intended.
Damian looked away.
I expected an argument. Instead, he walked toward the window and stood there, hands resting on the back of a chair.
My wolf watched him.
“He is hurt.”
“So am I.”
He remained silent for several seconds.
When he finally turned, the anger was gone from his face.
“I am scared.”
I had not expected that.
“Of what?”
“Of losing you.”
The answer came so plainly that I didn’t know what to say.
He rubbed a hand over his face.
“Every time your bloodline reacts, something changes. We find another enemy, another hidden record, another reason someone might come after you. I can fight wolves. I can secure Dartwood. I can put warriors around this estate and tear apart anyone who tries to breach it.”
His voice dropped.
“But I can’t fight whatever is happening inside you.”
I stayed where I was.
Damian continued.
“And I hate that.”

His male wolf stirred.
“Protect her.”
“I know,” Damian said quietly.
I looked at him. “You were talking to him?”
“He hasn’t stopped talking since the map activated.”
Despite myself, a small breath of laughter escaped me.
Damian almost smiled.
Then his expression became serious again.
“I am afraid that loving you is going to make me overprotective.”
The honesty took the fight out of me.
“You already are.”
“I know.”
“You were about to lock me in a room.”
“I was considering it.”
I gave him a look.
“Fine. I was seriously considering it.”
That earned another brief smile.
Then I crossed the room and stopped in front of him.
“I don’t need you to stop protecting me.”
“I know.”
“I need you to stop making decisions for me because you’re afraid.”
He nodded.

“And I need you to understand that when I tell you to slow down, it isn’t because I think you’re weak.”

“I know.”
“I need to know you will tell me when you are reaching your limit.”
I hesitated.
“That one is harder.”
“I know.”
My wolf shifted closer to his.
“He means it.”
“So do I.”
Damian reached for my hand, but waited until I gave it to him.

“I won’t stop you from investigating,” he said. “But we do it properly. Rhys keeps reconstructing the records. We take a medical team to Stonehedge. We check the facility with pack security, and nobody goes inside without knowing what those bloodline marks can trigger.”
I squeezed his hand.
“That sounds reasonable.”
“It is.”
“Don’t look so pleased with yourself.”
“I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
He gave me the faintest smile.
Across the room, Rhys cleared his throat.
We both turned.
“I hate to interrupt,” he said, “but I found something else.”
Damian released my hand and walked toward the screen.
I followed.
Rhys had opened another section of the recovered footage. A security access list was visible

beside the recording.
Three names had been removed.
But the timestamps remained.
One access entry belonged to Garret.
:
Another belonged to a medical officer whose name neither of us recognized.
The third had no name at all.
Only a number.
Rhys looked at us.
“That access number was used again six weeks ago.”
My stomach dropped. Damian’s hand found mine.

The investigation had just become much more current than either of us wanted. This was no longer about records or old rooms.
