I was still going through the documents on my desk when Cheryl walked in with Rhys behind her.
They had spent the morning tracing the suspicious transactions tied to the recent attacks on F- Tech, and their faces told me they had found something.
“Tell me it’s useful.”
Cheryl set a folder in front of me. “We traced several payments through logistics companies that look completely legal. Valid registrations, up–to–date tax records, and no obvious link to the people we suspect.”
I opened it. Freight transport, warehouse rentals, equipment delivery. Nothing that would raise an eyebrow in a routine financial review.
“How much money went through them?”
“Enough to be worth chasing. It was split into smaller amounts and sent through different accounts, and every transfer had invoices to back it up. Someone took the time to make it all look clean.”
Rhys pulled a chair up to my desk. “The same pattern shows up in several transactions, but the companies aren’t always the same. Whoever arranged this knew how to move money without making the whole thing depend on one business.”
I turned the page. The dates, account references, and payment descriptions had been laid out in a table, which saved me from digging through every document. “Who paid them?”
“That’s where it gets messy,” Cheryl said. “Some payments came from small businesses. Others passed through intermediaries, so the original source is hard to pin down. We’re still working backward.”
“Then why bring it to me now?”
“Because we found a connection to F–Tech.”
I looked up. “What connection?”
She turned her laptop toward me. Company names filled the screen, each with transaction dates and references to earlier business agreements. “These logistics companies received money from vendors that have worked with F–Tech. We checked the records against our old contracts, and some of those vendors had supplied services to us.”

“Are you telling me our vendors funded this?”

“I’m telling you the money passed through businesses connected to companies that once contracted with us,” she said carefully. “We haven’t established whether the vendors knew what they were helping to pay for.”
The distinction mattered, but it didn’t make me feel better. “Show me.”
She pulled up the first record, a payment from a vendor whose name I recognized from an old infrastructure contract. The money had moved through another company before landing with one of the logistics businesses under investigation. She opened a second record, then a third. The connections kept repeating in different forms. Equipment suppliers, transport firms, storage providers from past projects.
I checked the dates against our contract files. The vendors hadn’t all worked with us at the same time, and several agreements had ended months ago.
“Did we approve any of these payments?”
“Not directly. None of it went through F–Tech’s accounts. The link comes from the businesses and their history with us.”
“How did you find them?”
“We started with the payments we already knew were suspicious, identified who received the money, and traced their financial relationships. When some of those names showed up in our old vendor records, we pulled the contracts and kept following.”
Rhys pointed to a column. “None of this proves anyone inside F–Tech was involved. But we can’t ignore the possibility that someone used what they knew about our business relationships to move money through companies nobody would look at twice.”
I read the names again, searching for one that stood out. Some of these vendors had handled routine work for years, and a few had come recommended by people whose judgment I’d trusted at the time.
“Who had access to these contracts?”
“More people than we’d like. Procurement, finance, and project management all had the files. Some older records were also open to staff handling renewals.”
I closed the folder. “Get me the access records for every relevant file. Who viewed them, who downloaded copies, and whether anything was sent outside the company.”
“We’re on it, but some of the older systems don’t keep full logs. We may not be able to account for everyone who opened a document.”

“Get whatever exists. And don’t take anyone off the list because you think they’re trustworthy.”
Cheryl nodded and went back to her laptop.
I looked through the transactions again. F–Tech had dealt with hundreds of vendors over the years, and I couldn’t assume every company on this list had acted knowingly.
Still, the number of connections bothered me. Either these people had researched our commercial history carefully, or someone who knew how we operated had handed it to them. I couldn’t answer that from paper.
“Can we find out whether any of these companies still work with our current vendors?”
“Yes,” Cheryl said. “We’ll compare ownership records, registered directors, and known partners against our supplier database. We’ll also check for shared addresses or financial representatives.”
“Do that before anyone contacts a vendor. I don’t want them warned before we know what we’re dealing with.”
Rhys agreed, and Cheryl started adding tasks to her list.
I stared at the first company name again. A week ago it would have meant nothing to me. Now it sat at the start of a chain of payments leading back to businesses F–Tech had trusted.
I had spent years building this company, choosing partners, signing contracts, and putting people in positions where they could make decisions without running every detail past me.
couldn’t personally check every invoice, which was exactly why we had systems and people for it.
But if someone had used those same relationships against us, I needed to know how far in they’d gotten.
“Find out how deep this goes. Every vendor linked to these payments, and every contract they’ve held with us. I need to know if we’re looking at a few compromised businesses or something much bigger.”
Cheryl gathered her papers. Rhys opened the supplier database on his laptop, and for a few minutes the office was quiet except for typing.
Then Rhys stopped.
He scrolled back, then forward again, and his face changed. “Flourish.”
“What is it?”

“The oldest vendor on this list.” He kept his eyes on the screen. “I just checked who signed off on
bringing them in.”
I waited.
“I think you’ll want to see this yourself.”
