“Manage decisions affecting the network, coordinate its resources, and act on its behalf while the appointed representative remains authorized under the agreement.”

“Who can appoint this person?”

“That’s the problem. The clause allows the appointment to take effect if the recognized heir becomes unavailable to perform their duties. The temporary representative would then assume operational control under the terms of the original agreement.”

Damian pulled the document closer.

“Who decides that the heir is unavailable?”

Eugene pointed to another paragraph. “The agreement refers to a declaration made by the designated custodians of the bloodline records. It doesn’t clearly define what evidence they must provide, and the original wording leaves room for interpretation.”

My wolf reacted to the possibility of someone using an old agreement to take control of the network.

*They want our place.*

I kept reading, searching for a condition that would prevent the clause from being used without my knowledge.

The agreement mentioned temporary authority, but it offered little detail about how the appointment could be challenged once activated.

“Has anyone used this clause before?” I asked.

“Not according to the records I’ve reviewed,” Eugene replied. “But someone preserved the provision instead of removing it when later agreements were drafted. That suggests considered important.”

“Or someone wanted to keep it available,” Damian said.

I looked at Callum.

He had not spoken since Eugene explained the clause. His eyes remained on the document, and his jaw had tightened.

“Uncle, do you know something about this?”

Callum drew a chair out and sat down.

“Yes.”

The single word changed the mood in the room.

I put the document aside. “Then tell me.”

He looked at Damian before returning his attention to me. “The Voss family has been trying to activate that clause for years.”

I stared at him, waiting for him to explain.

“Voss?” I asked. “Your family?”

“My family has a long history with the First Alpha Bloodline Network. Certain members believe they should have greater authority over its operations because of their connection to the original bloodline agreements.”

“And they intend to get that authority by declaring me unavailable?”

“That has been one of their objectives.”

Damian stood from his chair. “You knew this was possible, and you never told us?”

“I knew they were interested in the clause. I didn’t know they had found a way to use it.”

“That’s not what I asked,” Damian replied.

Callum’s expression hardened. “I was trying to establish how much of the family was involved before I brought the matter to Flourish. Accusing people without evidence would have made it easier for them to deny everything.”

I understood his concern, but I was still angry that he had kept this information from me.

“How long have you known?”

“Years. The first time I heard about their interest in the clause, I was younger, and I didn’t understand how far they intended to take it. Later, when I realized they were serious, I began looking into the matter.”

“Did you confront them?”

“Not directly. I needed evidence that would hold up if the issue reached the other packs.”

I returned my attention to Eugene’s document. The provision was real, and it had remained in the network’s records long enough for someone to build a plan around it.

“Does the clause name a specific person who would take control?” I asked.

“No.” Eugene replied. “It allows a temporary representative to be designated, but the selection process depends on the circumstances under which the clause is invoked. We need to examine the accompanying agreements before we can determine the exact procedure.”

“Then find them. Every related agreement, every amendment, and every record explaining how this provision is supposed to work.”

Eugene nodded and began making a list.

I looked at Callum again. “If Voss has been trying to trigger this for years, what changed now?”

“I don’t know for certain,” he admitted. “But your position in the network has become more important, and several packs have begun recognizing you as the person responsible for coordinating its operations. That may have made them believe they need to act before their opportunity disappears.”

I glanced at Damian. He was watching Callum, clearly dissatisfied with what he had heard, but he did not interrupt.

I returned to the agreement and read the clause once more. Someone had left a legal opening that could allow an outsider to assume control of the network if I became unable to carry out my duties.

The Voss family had known about it for years, and Callum had only now told me how seriously they had pursued it.

I closed the document.

“Then we need to find out who they’re preparing to put in that position.”
