Chapter 345 The Second Vessel’s Choice
Lady Flourish POV
Amara remained beside the sitting room window after Damian and I returned from his office.

She had been quiet since we told her about the latest security concerns, listening without offering much beyond the occasional question.
When Damian asked whether she needed anything, she shook her head and continued watching the guards moving around the estate.
I understood her hesitation. She had spent years separated from the family she barely remembered, and every new discovery seemed to give her another reason to doubt the people around her.
I wanted her to feel safe here, but I couldn’t decide what safety meant for her without asking.
“Would you like to talk?” I asked.
Amara glanced at me. “About what?”
“Anything you want. We don’t have to discuss the bloodline or what happened before you came here.”
She considered that before turning away from the window. “I want to know what happens next.”
“That’s a fair question.”
“Everyone keeps talking about protecting me. Your guards are outside, Damian’s warriors keep checking the estate, and people are searching records because someone might be looking for me.” She folded her arms. “How long am I supposed to live like this?”

I didn’t have a clean answer. The danger was real, and I wasn’t going to tell her otherwise just to make her feel better.
“I don’t know how long the security measures will be necessary,” I admitted. “But you won’t be expected to spend every day in this room. We can work out what you’re comfortable doing, and you can tell us when something doesn’t suit you.”
“And if I want to leave?”
“Then we’ll talk about where you want to go and how to keep you safe. I won’t pretend I’d be happy about you walking into danger, but I won’t lie to you about your choices either.”
She watched me closely, as if trying to determine whether I meant what I said. I let her take her time. She had heard enough promises from people who claimed to know what was best for her.
“Do you want me to stay here?” she asked at last.
“Yes,” I replied. “I want you here, but I don’t want you to feel that you owe me your presence because we’re connected by blood.”
Her expression changed slightly at that. She looked down at her hands, rubbing her thumb over one of her fingers.
“I still don’t know what to call you,” she said.
“You don’t have to call me anything you’re not ready for.”
“You seem to have accepted all of this faster than I have.”
“I’ve had more time to understand what it means. Even then, there are things I still don’t understand.” I sat across from her. “Finding out that you’re my sister doesn’t erase the fact that we’re strangers in many ways.

We have to get to know each other.”

Amara looked toward the window again. “I don’t remember growing up with you. I don’t remember our parents together, or anything that would make this feel familiar.”
“I know.”
“And sometimes, when you look at me, I feel like you’re waiting for me to become someone you remember.”
I hadn’t expected that. I had been careful not to demand affection from her, but I hadn’t considered that my own hope might still feel like
pressure.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I may have been doing that without realizing it. You don’t have to become the person I remember, especially when I don’t have enough memories to tell you who that person was.”
She nodded slowly. Her shoulders relaxed, though she still kept some distance between us.
For a while, we talked about ordinary things. She asked about the estate, the pack members who worked there, and whether the guards always changed shifts so frequently.
I explained the routines without making every answer about her safety. When she asked about the wolves who lived beyond the estate grounds, I told her about Dartwood and the neighboring territories,
She listened with genuine interest, asking how pack bonds worked and whether every wolf could sense an Alpha’s presence.
I explained that strength and sensitivity differed among wolves, and that our bloodline carried abilities we were still learning to understand.

“Does that mean I have to follow your rules?” she asked.

“Some rules apply to everyone staying here, especially those concerning security. But you can question them. If you think something is unfair, tell me.”
She gave me a doubtful look. “And you’ll listen?”
“I’ll try to. Damian is learning that I expect the same from him.”
That earned a small smile from her. It was brief, but it was the first time she had looked at me without immediately returning to the question of what connected us.
Later, Damian joined us. He didn’t interrupt our conversation or ask Amara to explain what she had decided about staying. He took a seat nearby and listened while she asked him about the estate’s security arrangements.
When she finished, he answered her questions and made it clear that the guards were there to protect her, not to monitor her every movement.
He also explained that she could request an escort when she wanted to leave the grounds.
“I’m not promising I’ll stay here forever,” Amara told him.
“You don’t have to,” he replied. “We want you to make that decision because it’s what you want, not because you think you have no other option.”
She studied him for a moment, then looked at me. I didn’t speak. This was her decision, and I wasn’t going to fill the silence with another promise she hadn’t asked for.
“I don’t want to return to Hollow Ridge,” she said finally.

I kept my hands folded in my lap, afraid that reaching for her might make the moment harder than it needed to be.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“No. I’m sure I don’t want to go back there right now.” She took a breath. “I want to stay here, with you. I want to understand what happened to me, but I need to do that somewhere I can ask questions without feeling that someone is deciding my future for me.”
“You can stay,” I told her. “We’ll take it one day at a time.”
Amara nodded. She didn’t call me her sister, and I didn’t ask her to. For now, she had chosen to remain with me, and it was the first bond between us that neither of us had been forced to accept.
