Flourish was still working when I finally convinced her to take a break. She saved her files, closed the laptop, and reminded me that our walk was my idea, so I had better not complain if she chose the route.
I told her I would survive.
We had barely reached the courtyard when Jessa approached us from the eastern side of the estate. She wore her patrol jacket, and there was dirt on one sleeve.
“Alpha, we found a problem with the lower wards,” she said. “The boundary markers near the old storage building aren’t responding properly.”
I looked toward the building. It had been part of the estate long before Flourish and I began living here, and most of its rooms were used for tools and maintenance supplies.
“Did anyone cross the boundary?”
“We haven’t found signs of an intruder. The ward readings are dropping in one section, but the markers themselves haven’t been damaged.”
I turned to Flourish. She was already watching me.
“Go,” she said. “I’ll be fine.”
“I know. I’ll come back as soon as I can.”
She gave me a quick kiss before heading inside, and I followed Jessa toward the storage building.
Two warriors were waiting beside the eastern wall. One had a ward-reading device, while the other had marked the affected area with a strip of red cloth. The moment I approached, my wolf lifted its head.
“There’s something wrong here,” it warned.
I crouched beside the nearest marker. The ward stone was intact, but the energy passing through it was weaker than it should have been.
I ran my fingers over the ground around its base, searching for signs of tampering.
“How far does the disruption extend?” I asked.

“About six metres,” Jessa replied. “It gets stronger when we move toward the building.”
We followed the readings along the wall until the device began registering a second energy source beneath the ground. I looked at Jessa.
“There’s a structure underneath.”
“That’s what we thought, but the estate plans don’t show anything below this section.”
I called two more warriors to secure the area, then ordered everyone to keep their distance until we understood what we had found.
If someone had built a hidden chamber beneath the estate, I wasn’t going to let my curiosity send a patrol member into a trap.
We checked the building’s foundation and found an old iron ring almost hidden beneath a layer of soil and dead leaves.
It was attached to a stone panel that looked like part of the foundation. When the warriors cleared the surrounding dirt, a narrow seam became visible along its edges.
The panel had been sealed from the outside.
Jessa looked at me. “Should we open it?”
“After we check for traps.”
The inspection took another twenty minutes. We found no explosives or pressure mechanisms, but the seal carried traces of old ward magic.
Someone had concealed the entrance carefully, and whoever did it had known enough about the estate’s protections to keep the chamber hidden from ordinary inspections.
I ordered the seal broken.
The panel shifted with a grinding sound, revealing a short flight of stone steps descending into darkness.
A stale smell came up from below, carrying traces of old medicine and wolf scent.
I took a torch from one of the warriors and went down first. Jessa followed, with two others behind us.
The chamber was smaller than I expected. There were three narrow beds against one wall, a metal cabinet, and a table with several rusted restraints fixed to its surface.
Dust covered most of the room, but the beds had been built for use rather than storage.

I moved toward the cabinet. Its door hung crookedly from one hinge, and inside lay empty medicine bottles, old bandages, and a stack of papers tied together with a faded cord.
“Alpha,” Jessa called from the other side of the chamber.
She had found marks on the wall beside the beds. Some were scratches, while others looked like measurements. Several had dates written beside them.
I studied the markings. They appeared to record the height of children over a period of time.
My jaw tightened.
“Check the papers,” I told her. “Don’t remove anything from its place until we’ve documented the room.”
The first few sheets were damaged beyond use. Others contained brief records of meals, medical checks, and shifting episodes.
The names had been crossed out, but several entries referred to children with unusual bloodline responses.
One line caught my attention: ‘Subject transferred before the next activation test.’
I read it twice.
The records didn’t establish who had brought the children here or where they had been taken.
They did, however, make one thing clear. This chamber had been used to hold children connected to bloodlines, and the people responsible had intended to keep them here temporarily.
I looked at the beds again. Three children could have slept there, perhaps more if the records covered different periods.
“How long has this been sealed?” I asked.
Jessa examined the door frame. “The outer seal is old, but I can’t tell when it was placed. Someone may have entered before it was closed.”
I crouched beside the table and found a small metal tag beneath one of its legs. It carried a number and a symbol I recognized from the old bloodline records Flourish had been reviewing at F-Tech.
My phone was in my hand before I finished examining it.
I called Rhys and told him to send a secure team to document the chamber. Then I asked him

to search the archive for the symbol and number, keeping the search separate from the existing bloodline files until we knew what we were dealing with.
When I ended the call, I noticed another detail near the far wall. A narrow opening had been concealed behind a loose stone panel.
Unlike the entrance we had found, its edges were clean, with little dust caught in the seams.
I signaled for everyone to move back.
Someone might have sealed this chamber years ago, but the hidden panel suggested there was more to investigate.
I stared at the opening, listening to the quiet sounds of the warriors behind me.
“Nobody touches that panel,” I ordered. “Not until we know what’s on the other side.”
