I was still reviewing the new bloodline protocol when Damian took my laptop away from me.
“Give that back.”
“No.”
I looked at him from the sofa in our bedroom. “Damian, I’m working.”
“And I’m taking care of my wife. Apparently, neither of us can do our job without interfering with the other.”
I reached for the laptop, but he raised it above my head. The movement would have been more impressive if he hadn’t been sitting close enough for me to grab his shirt.
“You’re enjoying this,” I accused.
“Very much.”
I caught the front of his shirt and pulled him toward me.
He laughed, lowered the laptop onto the table behind him, and kissed my forehead before I could complain again.
“You’ve been home for two days,” I reminded him. “You have responsibilities in Dartwood.”
“I have people handling them.”
“And if something happens?”
“They’ll call me.”
I narrowed my eyes. Damian had a habit of making difficult decisions sound simple when he wanted his way.
Unfortunately, I knew him well enough to recognize when he had already made up his mind.
“You cannot spend the entire day watching me work.”
“I wasn’t planning to.” He stood and held out his hand. “Come downstairs. You’ve had coffee, but you haven’t eaten anything.”
“I had a sandwich.”

“Half a sandwich.”
I paused. “How do you know that?”
“Because I brought it to you, Flourish.”
That was difficult to argue with. I took his hand, allowing him to pull me to my feet, and followed him downstairs.
He had arranged breakfast in the sitting room rather than the dining room.
There were eggs, toast, sliced fruit, and a pot of tea on the table. I stopped at the doorway and looked at him.
“You made all this?”
“I supervised.”
“Of course you did.”
“The cook was concerned about my ability to handle a frying pan. I felt the need to defend my reputation.”
I laughed and sat down. Damian took the chair beside mine instead of sitting opposite me, and he served me before filling his own plate.
I ate while he told me about a dispute between two Dartwood patrol teams over which one had been assigned to a damaged section of the eastern fence.
According to him, both teams had spent twenty minutes arguing before discovering that neither had checked the latest duty schedule.
“So your warriors nearly started a fight because they couldn’t read?” I asked.
“They can read. They simply prefer arguing.”
“Sounds familiar.”
He turned to look at me. “Are you calling me argumentative?”
“I’m calling you an Alpha.”
He laughed loudly enough that a passing servant glanced into the room. Damian waved him away, still smiling, and I found myself laughing too.
We had spent so much time discussing threats, bloodline records, and pack security that I had

forgotten how easily we could talk about nothing important.

There had been a time when our disagreements ended with one of us making a ridiculous remark just to get the other to smile.
I missed that version of us.
After breakfast, I tried to return to my laptop, but Damian appeared with a tray of tea and a small plate of pastries. He placed them beside me, then moved a cushion behind my back.
“You know I can take care of myself,” I told him.
“I know.”
“Then why are you treating me like I’m about to collapse?”
His hands paused on the cushion. “Because the last time you kept working through exhaustion, you became ill. I don’t want to repeat that.”
His voice had lost its teasing edge. I reached for his wrist before he could step away.
“I’m not going to ignore my health again.”
“You say that now.”
“Damian.”
He looked at me.
“I mean it. I’ll take breaks, eat properly, and stop when I’m tired. But you have to let me manage my work without checking every five minutes to see whether I’ve breathed.”
His mouth twitched. “Every five minutes is excessive. I’ll check every ten.”
I pulled him down beside me and kissed his cheek. “You’re impossible.”
“Yet you married me.”
“And sometimes I wonder what was wrong with me.”
He pressed a hand to his chest in mock offense. I laughed when he leaned over and kissed me before I could say anything else.
For the next hour, I worked while he answered calls from Dartwood. He kept his voice low, but I caught enough of the conversations to know he was dealing with ordinary pack matters rather than an emergency.

When one call ended, he stretched his arm along the back of my chair and rubbed my with his free hand.
I leaned into his touch without looking away from the screen.
“Your hands are distracting,” I told him.
“Would you prefer that I stop?”
“No.”
“Then I shall continue.”

His fingers moved to the back of my neck, easing the stiffness I hadn’t realized had built there. I closed my eyes for a moment, and he pressed a kiss to my temple.

My wolf responded to his presence through our bond, relaxed and content. His wolf answered, and the familiar warmth between us made me smile.
“You’re very pleased with yourself,” I murmured.
“My mate is sitting beside me, allowing me to spoil her. I have every reason to be pleased.”
I turned in my chair and rested my arms around his waist. He hugged me, his palm moving over my back, and for a few minutes I forgot about the open files on my screen.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the caller and sighed. “Dartwood.”
“Go. Your warriors might be trying to fight over another fence.”
He kissed me before answering, but he stayed beside me throughout the call. When he finished, he put the phone away and drew my chair closer to his.
“One more hour,” he said. “Then we’re going for a walk.”
“That’s a very specific order.”
“It’s a request from your husband.”
I studied him, then saved my work. “Fine. One hour.”
He smiled and returned to his seat beside me. I reopened the protocol files, but this time I left my hand resting in his while I worked.
