I didn’t trust the Veylan relative’s account, but Damian’s questioning had given us enough information to try another approach.
The suspect had agreed to return the following evening to discuss the old business records their family once handled for Stonehedge.
I arranged the meeting at F-Tech, presenting it as a private dinner to review a possible legal settlement concerning outdated company transactions.
The invitation made no mention of Voss, the dead healer, or the missing records.
If the suspect believed we were offering a way to protect the family’s reputation, they might tell us more than they had during Damian’s questioning.
Cheryl helped me prepare the private dining room. We chose a small table away from the main offices, with security positioned outside but no visible guards inside.
Cheryl would remain nearby, officially responsible for the business documents we intended to discuss. Rhys would monitor the suspect’s communications from another room.
“Are we expecting trouble?” Cheryl asked as she placed the folders on the table.
“Not unless someone gives us a reason.”
She looked at me. “That isn’t quite the same as saying no.”
I almost smiled. “Keep your attention on the conversation. If they ask to use the restroom or leave the room, let me know. Don’t make it obvious.”
“And Rhys?”
“He’s watching their communications. He’ll alert us if anything unusual happens.”
Cheryl nodded and returned to arranging the documents.
My wolf was already suspicious of the guest. Damian had described the fear in their scent, but fear alone couldn’t tell us whether someone was innocent.
Wolves could be frightened because they were being hunted, because they had something to hide, or because they had spent years living with the consequences of another person’s decisions.
I needed to know which applied here.

The suspect arrived shortly after seven. Their scent reached me before Cheryl opened the door, carrying the same nervousness Damian had described. I greeted them and invited them to sit.
“Thank you for coming,” I said. “I know the circumstances surrounding your family’s old work have been difficult.”
“I wasn’t sure what you wanted to discuss.”
“Some outstanding records. F-Tech has been reviewing old transactions, and your family’s name appears in several places. I thought it would be better to speak privately before drawing conclusions.”
They glanced at the folders.
“Is this about the healer?”
I kept my expression neutral. “Among other matters.”
Their fingers tightened around the edge of the chair. My wolf noticed the change in their
scent, too.
“Let’s eat first,” I said. “We can discuss the documents afterward.”
The meal began with ordinary conversation about the family’s former business arrangements.
I asked when they had stopped handling transfers for Stonehedge and whether they remembered any disputes involving missing paperwork.
Their answers were vague at first, but they gradually offered details about the way their father had operated.
“He didn’t let me handle everything,” they explained. “He kept certain clients separate. If a package arrived with instructions not to record the recipient, he dealt with it himself.”
“Did he explain why?”
“No. He said some clients valued privacy.”
“Did that change after Callum Voss became involved?”
Their fork stopped halfway to their mouth.
“I don’t know when he became involved.”
“But you recognize his name.”

“I’ve heard it before.”
“From your father?”
They set the fork down. “Yes.”

I let the silence continue while Cheryl poured water into my glass. She remained attentive without staring at the suspect, occasionally making notes about the transactions we had supposedly gathered to discuss.
“My father said Voss had people who could ruin a family without ever entering its home,” the suspect finally admitted. “He warned me never to answer questions about certain deliveries.”
“Did your father tell you what those deliveries contained?”
“No.”
“Did you ever open one?”
Their head lifted sharply. “No. I knew better.”
The response came with enough fear that I believed they had been warned. Whether they had obeyed every instruction was another question.
“What about the records you kept after your father’s death?” I asked. “You told Damian you had an envelope connected to the healer.”
They looked toward Cheryl, then back at me.
“I thought this dinner was about business.”
“It is. Those records may involve transactions carried out through Stonehedge, and I need to understand what my company might be connected to.”
“Your company wasn’t involved.”
“Then helping us establish that shouldn’t be a problem.”
They rubbed their thumb against the side of their glass. “I haven’t looked inside the envelope in years.”
“Did you bring it?”
“No.”
“Where is it?”

I watched their face, waiting for more. Their scent had grown stronger, and their wolf was pressing close enough that I could see the tension in their jaw.
Before I could continue, Cheryl’s phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen, then excused herself to answer a call outside the room.
The interruption lasted less than a minute. When she returned, she resumed her place without comment, but I noticed her look toward me before sitting down.
The suspect noticed it too.
“Is there something wrong?” they asked.
“No,” I replied. “Please continue.”
They pushed their plate away. “I don’t think I can tell you anything else.”
“You haven’t told me who your father was afraid of.”
“I told you. Voss and his people.”
“That explains the threats. It doesn’t explain why the healer’s records disappeared, or why your father kept an envelope he believed would prove your family was innocent.”
Their expression changed.
“He didn’t say it would prove we were innocent. He said it might help us explain what happened.”
That distinction mattered.
Before I could ask another question, my earpiece clicked. Rhys spoke quietly.
“Flourish, the suspect’s device has attempted to send an encrypted message. The transmission failed, but it was directed outside the local network.”
I kept my eyes on the person across from me.
“Can you identify the recipient?” I asked under my breath.
“Not yet. I’m tracing the destination.”
The suspect reached for their glass, then stopped when they realized I was watching them.
“What is it?” they asked.

“An interruption.”

I rose and gathered the business papers. “I think we’ve covered enough for tonight. We’ll arrange another meeting once we’ve reviewed the remaining records.”
They stood quickly, appearing relieved to leave. Cheryl escorted them to the entrance while I remained at the table, waiting for Rhys to call back.
My earpiece clicked again.
“The message wasn’t sent to a number in their contacts,” Rhys said. “Someone has been using a temporary relay, and the connection disappeared before I could identify the destination.”
I looked at the untouched folder beside my plate.
The suspect had been afraid before arriving, frightened during dinner, and visibly anxious when Cheryl received her call. Yet the attempted message suggested they had expected something to happen tonight.
I couldn’t tell whether they had been trying to warn someone or ask for help.
Either way, our dinner had revealed more than the suspect intended.
And until we found that envelope, I had no way of knowing which parts of their story were
true.
