Rhys called before I left F-Tech.

“We recovered part of the transmission,” he told me when I answered. “The message was short, and most of it was encrypted. I couldn’t identify the recipient, but one phrase came through clearly.”
“What phrase?”
“She knows everything.”
I stopped beside my office door. “Who is she?”
“That’s what I’m trying to establish. The message didn’t include a name.”
“Could it have been sent to Callum Voss?”
“There’s no evidence of that yet. I won’t guess when we have so little to work with.”
I ended the call and went back inside. The suspect had left less than an hour earlier, and already someone might know about our questions.
I called Damian and explained what Rhys had recovered.
“Do you think the message was about Amara?” he asked.
“I don’t know. But if the suspect knows something about her, we need to hear it before whoever received that message has time to interfere.”
Damian offered to send warriors to locate the suspect, but I asked him to wait.
We had no proof they intended to harm anyone, and I didn’t want our investigation turning into a pursuit based on two words.
Instead, I called the suspect and requested another meeting. I told them we needed to clarify a discrepancy in the old records. They hesitated before agreeing to return the following morning.
When they arrived, I met them in my office.
Unlock succeeded ide, while Rhys listened from the adjoining room. I had no intention of
revious evening’s questions
This time, I wanted an answer to something they had avoided telling us.

“You sent a message after our dinner,” I began.
Their face lost color. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Your device attempted to transmit an encrypted message. We recovered part of it.”
They stared at me.
“She knows everything,” I said. “Who were you talking about?”

For several seconds, they didn’t answer. Their wolf reacted to the pressure, and their scent filled the room with fear. They looked toward the door, but I didn’t move to block it.
“If you want to leave, you can,” I told them. “But if someone is threatening you, I need to know. And if you’ve been protecting someone who helped take my sister away, I need to know that too.”
Their head lifted at the mention of Amara.
“Your sister is alive?”
The question came out before they could stop it.
I felt my wolf rise. “You knew she survived.”
They stood so abruptly that the chair scraped against the floor.
“I didn’t know where she was!”
I remained seated, though every instinct urged me to demand an explanation immediately.
They pressed both hands against the table. Their breathing had become rough, and their eyes had begun to change as their wolf pushed forward.
“I knew there were two girls,” they said. “I knew the second one hadn’t died. That’s all I knew.”
“How did you learn that?”
“My father received instructions about a transfer. He was told to record one child as dead, but the other was to be moved somewhere else. He wasn’t given the destination.”
“And you saw these instructions yourself?”
They nodded. “After he died, I found a copy among his papers. I didn’t understand what it meant until I heard people talking about the bloodline years later.”
“Who were these people?”

“I don’t know their names. One of them worked with the people who threatened my family. He told my father that the child must never be found by anyone outside their circle.”
“Did your father know who ordered the transfer?”
“No. He only knew that refusing wasn’t an option.”
I watched them carefully. Their fear was real, and the details came with the discomfort of someone admitting something they had spent years trying to bury.
Still, they had withheld this information during Damian’s questioning and again at dinner.
“Why didn’t you tell us yesterday?”
“Because I was afraid you’d blame me for what happened to her.”
“You let us believe you knew nothing about the second vessel.”
“I was trying to protect my family.”
“By hiding that a child had been taken and falsely declared dead?”
Their voice rose. “What would you have done? My father was threatened. I was threatened. We had no pack strong enough to stand against the people giving those orders.”
I let the silence sit between us. I could understand fear without accepting it as an excuse for keeping such information from us.
“Who sent the message last night?” I asked.
“I was trying to warn someone.”
“Who?”
They shook their head. “I can’t tell you.”
“Can’t, or won’t?”
Their jaw tightened. “If they find out I’ve spoken, my family will pay for it.”
I stood. “Your silence has already protected people who took a child from her family.
Amara spent years without knowing the truth about her own life. I won’t promise you that your family will face no consequences, but I can offer protection if you cooperate.”
They looked down at the table. Their hands were still trembling.

“You’ve had years.”
“I know.” Their voice dropped. “But there are things I don’t understand myself.”
I believed that part. I also believed they were still keeping something from me.
After they left, I went into the adjoining roo
room.
Rhys had written down the new information, while Damian had arrived during the questioning and was waiting beside the desk.
“The records confirm a transfer and a false death entry,” Rhys said. “But we still don’t have a destination or the identity of the person who gave the order.”
I looked at the notes. Someone had known Amara survived, someone had arranged for her to disappear, and someone had ensured that the people handling the paperwork remained too frightened to speak.
This had gone far beyond one family accepting payments or carrying sealed packages.
The Veylans might have helped conceal the truth, but they hadn’t necessarily been the ones making decisions.
“Find the original transfer record,” I told Rhys. “And keep working on that message. I want to know who received it.”
Damian moved beside me. “You think someone above the Veylans arranged everything.”
“I do. They’ve been hiding the truth for decades, and we’ve only just found someone who admits knowing Amara survived.”
I gathered the notes and took them with me.
We finally had confirmation that Amara’s disappearance had been planned, but the person who ordered it was still out there, and someone had just been warned that I was getting closer.
