Chapter 2
Cade pulled back and glanced at Riley, annoyed, then turned to me.
“You look awful. Want me to grab you something?”
I was pressing on my stomach, about to say no, but Riley had already spun around.
“There’s no pharmacy here. What are you even talking about?!”
She looked at the half-melted iced coffee in the back and turned to me.
“It’s probably the cold drink. I’ll get you something hot.”
She grabbed a phone off the seat and headed toward the rest stop.
I watched her walk away. Then I looked at the phone still sitting in the cupholder.
She took the wrong one.
The one she grabbed was Cade’s.
Now it was just me and Cade.
“She always acts like she’s the only one who cares about you,” he muttered. “Like I don’t.”
He rested his hand on my stomach.
“My bad. I shouldn’t have gotten you all that ice.”
I looked up at him.
“Yeah. You remembered her period but forgot I just had a stomach thing and can’t drink cold stuff.”
His hand froze.
Something flashed in his eyes.
“I-she told me that-”
He clearly wasn’t expecting me to say that. He couldn’t even finish the sentence.
Chapter 2
Riley came back and shoved a cup of hot milk into my hands.
“Drink it while it’s hot-it’ll help.”
She was still holding Cade’s phone.
I nodded toward it. “Why didn’t you use yours?”
She blinked. Looked at Cade for a split second, then back at me.
“I grabbed the wrong one. I didn’t wanna make you wait so I just used his.”
She draped her arm over my shoulder.
“Maya, you’re not jealous, are you?”
“I only know his password ’cause it’s always been your anniversary. I’ve been celebrating with you guys for years-how would I not know?”
I didn’t say anything.
Maybe the lock screen made sense.
But his payment password?
Even I don’t know that.
I held the cup and took a sip. The warmth slid down. Made me feel better.
She used to tell me I was her best friend.
As important as her parents.
That she’d never do anything to hurt me.
I kept my head down but I could feel the tension.
She must’ve given Cade some kind of signal.
He grabbed my hand.
“Babe, you’re probably just tired. Let’s get home so you can rest.”
The car started again but the vibe was completely different.
Riley didn’t play any more music.

Chapter 2
The only sound was the GPS from Cade’s phone.
I was the one who set that voice.
Some anime girl voice.
Whenever we got to a turn it would say:
“Fork ahead-don’t go the wrong way! Your wife’s waiting, so hurry home!”
I set it the day we got our license. Poked him and said,
“You’re keeping this. I want everyone in this car to know you’re married.”
He laughed and said, “Yes ma’am.”
Those memories felt so close, like they just happened.
My vision blurred.
Then Riley reached over and grabbed his phone.
Tapped the screen a few times.
Put it back.
When the GPS spoke again it was some generic male voice.
Cade frowned and shot her a look.
Riley acted like she didn’t see it.
“That voice was so annoying. Maya needs quiet.”
I smiled-barely-and blinked the tears back.
I shoved the milk aside, leaned back, and closed my eyes.
But my mind kept going.
Everything I didn’t notice. Everything I ignored.
It all came flooding back.
