Watching Claire get ripped apart like that, something in Grayson snapped. 

He shoved through the crowd. Got between her and everyone else. 

“Back the fuck off! You got something to say? Say it to me!” 

The guy just laughed in his face. 

“Bro, she’s been around the block more times than you wanna know. You’re the only idiot treating her like she’s something special.” 

He crossed his arms. 

“You know why she really came back from Paris? Got caught sleeping with some married exec. Wife found out. Had to 

run.” 

Another guy spoke up. “She tried getting with half of us, man. You’re not special.” 

“Grayson, you’re a fucking idoit.” 

The room erupted. 

Claire screamed. Tears everywhere. 

“You’re lying! All of you!” 

She grabbed Grayson’s jacket, fingers digging in. “That bitch Natalie set this up-she told you to say this-Grayson, don’t believe them-” 

Grayson just stood there. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t think. 

Then the doors burst open. 

Cops flooded in. 

Lead officer walked straight to Claire. 

“Claire Laurent? You’re under arrest. Attempted poisoning of a minor. Evidence is solid. Let’s go.” 

Mrs. Laurent collapsed. Mr. Laurent caught her.

“What did you do?! What the hell did you do to us?!” 

“Wait-what? Poisoning? I didn’t poison anyone!” Claire’s eyes went wild. She backed up. 

The cop pulled out his phone. Hit play. 

“Victim’s mother submitted this. Hospital records back it up. Shows you hurt the kid multiple times.” 

Grayson saw the hospital room in the background. 

His stomach dropped. 

“You poisoned Annie? Are you out of your fucking mind?!” 

Claire shook her head so hard her hair flew. “No! I didn’t! You were there-I just gave that brat some goat milk! That’s all! And that bitch Natalie actually called the cops?!” 

She dug her nails into his arm. “Tell them! Tell them I didn’t do anything wrong!” 

Goat milk. 

Everything stopped. 

Grayson felt the floor tilt under him. 

“You fed her goat milk? You know she’s allergic!” 

Annie was born two months early. Weak. Fragile. One sip of goat or cow milk could kill her. 

When she was three months old, someone at a family gathering gave her formula by mistake. She ended up in the ICU. Tubes everywhere. Almost didn’t make it. 

Grayson stayed outside that room for fourteen hours straight. Didn’t eat. Didn’t sleep. Blamed himself for weeks. 

After that, they cleared out everything. No dairy. Nothing. 

And now-because he let Claire do whatever the hell she wanted-his daughter almost died. 

He watched the video. 

Claire’s hand clamped around Annie’s jaw. Forcing the bottle into her mouth. Hot goat milk pouring down her throat. 

Annie’s face went red. White foam bubbled out. She couldn’t even scream. 

Cold sweat ran down Grayson’s back. 

Chapter 6 

“Claire… what happened to you?” 

His voice came out flat. Dead. 

“She’s one year old. She can’t even talk. I thought you were just selfish. Immature. I didn’t think you’d actually hurt a baby.” 

Then it hit him. 

Natalie. Sitting alone outside the ER that night. 

Everything today-every single thing-felt like someone poured ice water over his head and he finally woke up. 

He didn’t defend Claire. Didn’t listen to her excuses. For the first time in his life, he didn’t clean up her mess. 

He turned around. Ran for his truck. Drove home. 

Pushed open the door. 

Empty. 

Completely empty. 

He froze.
