Right then, Ryan pulls up. 

Parks down the street a bit. 

Sees us standing there but doesn’t rush over. Just calls out, voice easy and calm: 

“Ms. Parker, you good?” 

Mason whips around to look. 

His whole face twists. “Who the fuck is that?” 

“Seraphina, is this about him? Is that why you won’t-” 

“This has nothing to do with him.” I cut him off cold. 

“I’m done. That’s it. My heart’s been dead for a while now.” 

“For seven years I orbited around you. Threw away everything I wanted. And you acted like that was just… normal.” 

“You never gave a shit about me. Just silence. Just brushing me off.” 

“I was burning up with a 104 fever. Where were you? Off playing hero for Nora.” 

“I got trapped at that hotpot place, literally screaming for help. And you? You made sure she got out safe first.” 

“All those times you ignored me. All those times you threw me under the bus. You think a few sorry-ass words fix 

that?” 

“I was stupid back then, okay? But I can change!” Mason’s practically begging now, voice all shaky. 

“I know you’re amazing, Seraphina! Just one more shot. That’s all I’m asking! One!” 

Oh, so he gets to keep Nora and keep me on the side? Gets to have his cake and eat it too? 

Yeah, no. 

“I already gave you seven years’ worth of shots.” 

I turn my back on him.

Chapter 7 

“Mason, we don’t even exist in the same universe anymore.” 

“You go deal with your guilt trip. I’m gonna chase my dreams. And we’re never crossing paths again.” 

Ryan gets out of the car right on time. Speaks up, still gentle but firm: 

“We should get going.” 

“You’ve got that model fitting thing tomorrow morning. Can’t be late for that.” 

I nod and start walking with him toward the car. 

Mason watches us leave together. His voice cracks wide open: 

“Seraphina! I’m sorry, okay? I really am!” 

“How did you just… stop? How do you not love me anymore? I don’t get it!” 

His voice breaks into these pathetic little sobs behind us. 

I don’t look back. Don’t say anything. 

People like him never understand. Leaving someone isn’t some snap decision you make overnight. 

It’s every disappointment piled on top of the last one. Every time they let you down. Every time they chose someone 

else. 

I’ve said everything I needed to say. There’s nothing left. 

As we drive off, I catch Mason in the side mirror. Just standing there under that streetlight. 

Like some lost little kid who can’t find his way home. 

But I don’t feel bad for him. Not even close. Just this huge wave of relief washing over me. 

Ryan glances over. “You holding up okay?” 

I let out this dry little laugh. “That’s my soon-to-be ex-husband.” 

“Wild, right? Seven years together and he couldn’t even be bothered to have a real conversation with me.” 

He doesn’t pry into the details. 

Just says quietly, “Anyone who doesn’t see what they have isn’t worth keeping around. You did the right thing walking away.” 

Chapter 7 

I nod slowly. “Yeah. Guess it’s better late than never.”
