“She might not love me, but how could she treat marriage as a tool, a scheme?”

Drake grew increasingly agitated, smashing a glass against the counter in frustration.

“So that’s why you changed your feelings?”

Ethan hung his head, his voice filled with complex emotions.

Drake gave a bitter laugh:

“When you give your whole heart to someone, only to discover you were being manipulated the entire time, wouldn’t you feel hatred too?”

“What if I told you Amber was lying to you?”

“What did you say?!”

Ethan tugged at the corner of his mouth, revealing a pained smile:

“I only found out a few days ago that after Violet was sent to Vermont, my father personally closed all her bank accounts.”

“In a way, we should thank you. Without you, Violet might not have survived.”

“That’s impossible!”

Drake was so shocked he stood up abruptly, hitting the table. The corner scraped against the floor with a harsh sound.

“Is your father insane? Violet was only eight years old! Abandoning her in Vermont and giving her no money at all—if I hadn’t coincidentally been visiting my grandmother’s farm nearby and happened to meet Violet, she could have died there!”

As Drake continued, Ethan’s head hung lower and lower.

It wasn’t just Drake who couldn’t understand even Ethan couldn’t comprehend why our father

would want to harm his own biological daughter. Was it really just because I accidentally lost track of Amber? Hadn’t I already been deafened in one ear and banished to Vermont? Wasn’t that enough

punishment? Did he truly want me dead?

Seeing Ethan’s anguished expression, Drake’s anger gradually transformed into remorse.

What had he been doing all these years?

He unconsciously touched the rusted necklace at his neck:

“I need to find Violet!”

I had expected to face some inhuman torture when I arrived at the Blackwood estate.

At the very least, I thought they’d starve me for three days and nights.

But to my surprise, as soon as I arrived, I met the supposedly ruthless head of the Blackwood family. Then, jumping out from behind him was Olivia Blackwood herself-the very heiress Amber had Pushed down the stairs.

I hadn’t been present at the dinner party when it happened.

In fact, even though I’d been brought back to the Parker house, I was never allowed to attend those high-society events.

My father complained about my “country bumpkin” manners. My mother, though she never said it directly, suggested I take etiquette lessons first. Amber was even more cutting with her remarks “With Violet’s figure, I doubt she could even fit into a proper evening gown.”

So this was actually my first time meeting Olivia Blackwood.

But for some reason, she seemed oddly familiar to me.

Seeing my hesitation, Olivia rushed forward and hugged me:

“Violet! You haven’t really forgotten me, have you? You used to teach me how to paint!” That’s when it finally clicked:

“Are you… little Livvy?”

When I was abandoned in Vermont, I had no money, and I was too embarrassed to constantly ask Drake for food, so I often gathered wild vegetables from the mountain.

/

At first, I didn’t know what was edible and what wasn’t. After many trials and errors-some quite painful-I slowly figured it out.

And Olivia was a child I’d found on that mountain.

Back then, though her face was covered in tears and snot, her pretty princess dress made it clear she came from a wealthy family. She’d probably gotten separated from her parents during a family outing.
