Soon enough, Ava and Caleb were released. 

Hearing that Caleb had supposedly repented in The Keep, the Matriarch held a dinner, ostensibly to 

give him a chance to apologize to Mason. 

At the dinner, I saw Ava wearing a long coat and a silk scarf, despite it being early summer. The smug smile was gone from her face. Only I knew why she was dressed like that, to hide the wounds, 

beneath. 

In that cell, Caleb must have unleashed all his fury on her. 

He was a monster. Weak and sickly, powerless in the world, he took all his frustrations out on the 

woman closest to him. 

In my past life, he’d locked me up and beaten me daily. The ring on his thumb could be twisted to reveal hidden spikes. Whenever I displeased him in public, he’d use it to punish me. That pain was something I could never forget. 

Ava noticed me looking and immediately plastered on a smile, walking over to whisper in my ear. “Even though we were locked up for a few days, Caleb took such good care of me. He couldn’t bear to see me suffer at all.” 

Her voice turned sharp. “And you, Chloe… you stay away from Caleb from now on. If you hadn’t been throwing yourself at him, he never would’ve laid a hand on you!” 

The absurdity of it almost made me laugh. Even now, she was still lying to herself. 

“Ava,” I said quietly, “those wounds must hurt terribly.” 

Her face went deathly pale. “How… how do you know…?” 

I just smiled and walked away without another word, heading straight for Mason. 

Thanks to the daily tonic, his attitude toward me had softened considerably. He’d begun to take my hand voluntarily, to show small gestures of care. 

Like now, he handed me a cup of hot tea. “Your stomach’s been off. Stick to room temperature drinks for a while.” 

I could see the flames of jealousy raging in Ava’s eyes.
