Chapter 10
Back in our quarters, Mason threw a tube of medicinal ointment my way.
was stunned. I hadn’t expected him to show any concern. Maybe the herbs were starting to work.
Happily, I took the ointment and began applying it to my wounds myself.
He shot me a glare. “It’s just ointment. Why are you smiling like that?”
I couldn’t stop grinning. “Of course I am. It’s the first time you’ve done anything like this for me.” I met his gaze, my voice softening. “Mason, when a man treats his wife right… that’s everything.
“Women,” he grumbled, pulling the blanket over his head. “Always making a big deal out of nothing. What, you can’t function without a man around?”
With that, he turned away to sleep.
I settled back onto my small couch with a sigh. “Well, here I am, all beat up and still stuck on the couch… It’s fine. Just hurts a little…”
Before I could finish my lament, he yanked me onto the bed, his expression stormy. “Just go to sleep.”
In the end, his large frame was left curled up uncomfortably on the tiny couch. It was almost
comical.
I’d read that people who slept curled up like that often lacked a sense of security.
So, once he was asleep, I dared to drape a blanket over him. I knelt beside the couch and held him in my arms as he slept, slipping away quietly in the middle of the night.
I kept brewing the tonic for him every day, and he gradually grew accustomed to drinking it.
