#Chapter 5
By the time I came back, it was already ten at night.
Hayden had left ahead of schedule.
The housekeeper came over, took the bag from my hand, and hesitated before speaking.
“Ms. Lane, Mr. Hawthorne said they’re leaving first thing tomorrow morning, so they’re staying at
a hotel near the airport tonight. He asked me to let you know.”
I gave a quiet “Mm” and went upstairs.
I slept very well that night.
On the first day of my time off, I calmly got married at the courthouse.
There was no wedding. No wedding photos. Just two people and two certified copies of the marriage
certificate.
As soon as I stepped out of the county clerk’s office, Hayden sent me a message.
Hayden: [All right, Nora. What’s done is done. I’ve already arrived, so stop sulking.]
The location on his phone showed that he was indeed near the Sierra High Route.
I let out a laugh and was just about to block his number when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man and a woman standing at the bottom of the steps, about to walk inside.

Hayden hesitated for a few seconds.
Then his thumb gently brushed the redness at the corner of her eye. “All right. I’m the one who’s
wronged you.”
“Nora is chasing a wedding like I owe her one. Once she starts pushing, she never stops. This year, I

can finally breathe a little and spend time with you.”
He paused. “She won’t know about the courthouse marriage.”
Lila immediately beamed. Holding onto him, she hurried up the steps.
All of a sudden, I found it funny.
He had planned a “disappearance,” thinking I would stay right where I was and mourn him like widow for a year.
In the end, the moment he walked out the door, he brought another woman here to get married.
I turned and walked down the steps.
Behind me, the glass door of the county clerk’s office was slowly closing halfway when it suddenly stopped.
For some reason, Hayden turned around.
Through the door as it was closing, he saw a familiar figure from behind, and his footsteps paused
for an instant.
“Wait!”
