Chapter 3
From our brief interaction, I learned Mason was a staunch traditionalist. In his eyes, a woman was
little more than a burden.
I’d just been married off to him. My only option was to avoid provoking him.
Last time, my sister had been desperate to consummate the marriage, which only earned her severe beatings. On their wedding night, she’d been thrown out of the room, becoming the laughingstock of the entire clan.
To avoid the same humiliation, I spent the entire night sleeping on the bathroom floor.
The next morning, I was jolted awake by a basin of cold water dumped on my head.
“I need the bathroom,” Mason stated flatly, looming in the doorway like a pissed-off landlord.
“Sorry! I’m out of your way!” I scrambled past him, not even bothering to wipe my face.
He finished up and walked out without a glance, heading for the door.
I quickly grabbed his hand. “Mason, my mother wants us to come for dinner tonight. Could you
come with me?”
His brows knitted together instantly. “I’m swamped. Can’t you go by yourself?”
I reached up and placed my fingers on his forehead, gently smoothing the crease away. It was an instinctive gesture, something I used to do for Caleb, believing frowns brought bad luck.
“Don’t frown. It doesn’t suit you,” I said softly. “I can go alone, it’s fine. It’s just… back home, if a husband doesn’t show up with his wife the day after the wedding, people start saying she’s already
a widow.”
“What century is this? People still believe that crap?” He brushed my hand away, but the frown
didn’t return.
“I know, it’s silly. It’s fine, really. I can go alone. It’s just some gossip.” I pretended to walk toward
the door, counting down in my head.
On three, his voice stopped me. “I’ll go with you tonight.”
Then he grabbed his jacket and left.
Watching him go, a satisfied smile touched my lips. My gamble had paid off.

in my past life, I’d read countless psychology books. For someone with Mason’s explosive
temperament, you couldn’t confront him. You had to go with his flow and subtly apply a little social pressure. That kept his anger in check.
My sister, last time, had been fixated on physical intimacy, thinking it would win his heart. She never realized it only disgusted him more.
Nothing worth having comes quickly. It’s an old adage for a reason.
This life, I just wanted to change my fate. I refused to relive the same tragedy.
