Chapter 7 The Fated Mate’s Sudden Bond

Leon glanced back and forth between Kane and me, utterly stunned

“You’ve known each other for years. Why is the fated mate bond only activating now?”

Kane did not answer. He simply walked slowly to the bedside; his eyes fixed solely on me.

The invisible bond grew clearer with every step he took. I could even feel his longing–the urge to hold me, restrained by sheer willpower.

“I don’t know.” Kane’s voice was hoarse. “But I’m not wrong.”

Leon glanced at the bloodied bandages on my chest.

“The medical facilities here are too basic. We need to reach the Obsidian Pack medical center as soon as possible.”

Kane immediately bent down and lifted me into his arms.

I instinctively looped my arms around his neck, and his body stiffened instantly, his breath catching.

“Don’t be afraid.”

He looked down at me, holding me tighter instead of loosening his grip.

“I’ll protect you.”

Several hours later, we arrived at the Obsidian Pack territory.

Before the car door even opened, I saw Adrian and Julian standing outside the medical center, and my body went rigid with dread.

Kane instantly sensed my distress.

“What’s wrong?”

“My wound hurts a little.”

I lowered my head, hiding the hatred flashing in my eyes.

Kane carried me out of the car, and Adrian stepped forward to greet us.

“We apologize for the rogue ambush on your journey. We will assist with the full investigation.”

“We can discuss matters later.” Kane’s tone was cold. “Evelyn needs an immediate examination.”

At the sound of my name, Adrian froze, and Julian’s gaze locked tightly onto me.

“Have we met before?”

My heart clenched, but I feigned confusion and met his eyes.

“I’ve never been to the Obsidian Pack before. How could we have met?”

Julian refused to step aside.

“But you…”

“Enough.”

Kane stepped forward, shielding me completely behind his body.

“She just survived a near–death experience. You’re being rather rude.”

With that, he carried me straight into the medical center.

Shortly after the healer finished treating my wounds, Leon entered the ward.

“The captured rogue has woken up.”

Kane’s expression darkened, but he did not leave immediately.

“Go,” I whispered, “I’m alright now.”

He stared at me for a long moment, as if trying to tell whether I was putting on a brave front.

At last, he tucked my blanket snugly around me, told the wolf healer to look after me, then left with Leon.

The ward fell quiet quickly.

A little while later, through the half–cracked door, I saw Adrian stop the wolf healer and lead him into the exam room at the end of the hallway.

Recalling the look in his eyes just now, I ignored the burning pain of my wound and followed.

“Find a way to draw a vial of her blood.”

Adrian’s deliberately lowered voice seeped through the door crack.

My breath caught sharply.

“She lost a great deal of blood only recently. Routine checks don’t require another blood draw,” the wolf healer said, hesitant.

“Then add an extra blood test.”

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“Hand the sample straight to me once it’s drawn. Kane and Leon must not find out.”

After a short silence, the wolf healer murmured his reply.

“Yes, Alpha.”

I slipped back to the ward at once.

A year ago, Adrian had used the excuse of an examination to take my blood too.

A few days later, Lydia and I swapped bodies.

Could it never have been an accident at all?

The door swung open abruptly.

I hurried back onto the bed, only to see Kane step inside.

He walked to the bedside and reached out to touch my forehead.

“Why is your face so pale?”

His warm palm pressed against my skin. I flinched instinctively, but he cupped the nape of my neck gently to hold me still.

“Don’t move.”

His voice was soft, yet the worry in his eyes made me dare not meet his gaze.

“Kane, I need to ask you for a favor.”

“Anything.”

He agreed without a second’s hesitation.

I blinked in surprise.

“You didn’t even ask what it is.”

“If it won’t hurt you, I’ll do it.”

I clutched the bedsheets and lowered my voice.

“I need an empty blood collection vial just like the ones here, plus some dog’s blood.”

Kane’s brows drew together.

“What are you planning?”

“I can’t tell you right now, but this matters more than anything to me.”

He studied me, as though trying to pierce through the secrets I hid.

I shifted my gaze away, uneasy.

Just when I thought he would press for more answers, he brushed loose strands of hair behind my ear.

“Wait here for me.”

He paused at the doorway.

“Evelyn, I don’t know why you’ve changed so much after waking up

My heart clenched tight.

Kane glanced back at me.

“But I won’t force you to speak of things you don’t wish to share.”

In less than half an hour, he returned with the vial holding dog blood, asking no further questions.

Shortly after, the wolf healer pushed a medical cart into the ward.

“We need to draw a vial of blood to check for residual toxin from the wolf’s claws.”

Here it comes, I thought.

I held out my arm calmly. Once the wolf healer finished drawing blood and set the vial on the tray, a frantic shout echoed from outside.

“The patient in emergency is crashing!”

The wolf healer rushed off.

The instant the door clicked shut, I pulled out the dog blood, swapped the labels on the two vials, and hid my own blood under the covers.

Moments later, the healer returned, grabbed the tampered sample, and left again.

I watched his retreating and tightened my grip around the vial in hand.

A year ago, after Adrian took my blood, Lydia stole my body.

Now, what would they do when they ended up with blood from a dog instead?
