Chapter 13
The day after I returned to the lab, Director Harrison called me into his office.
“The paperwork for the vehicle is being handled. We’ve logged the identities of everyone who laid a hand on you. How do you want to play this?”
“Let it go.”
Director Harrison frowned.
“Coates-”
“They’re just a group of clueless old classmates, being used by Amber.” I paused. “I don’t want a public spectacle. As long as Amber stays out of my life from now on.”
Director Harrison looked at me, saying nothing for a long beat.
“Your mother had the same temper,” he finally said. “Always willing to let things slide, even when she was the one wronged.”
I didn’t answer.
As I walked out of the office, my phone buzzed.
It was a string of messages from Pierce. More than a dozen, sent from last night through this morning.
“Eleanor, are you back? Please, just answer me.”
“It really isn’t what you think. Let me see you, let me explain in person.”
“Just say something. Even if you want to yell at me, just reply.”
“Please.”
I didn’t reply.
I locked the screen and tossed the phone into my drawer.
ľ
That afternoon, Dr. Helen from the lab walked in with two cups of tea, setting one on my desk.
“Hear you got beaten up after taking one day off?”
“Word travels fast.”
“No kidding. Director Harrison mobilized over a hundred vehicles for that retrieval. The whole facility heard about it.” She sat down across from me.
“But no one knows the details. Want to talk about it?”

I thought for a moment.
“My husband’s mistress threw a wedding, and my whole class was invited. They thought I was the other
woman.”
Dr. Helen froze, her tea cup hovering.
“And what’s your husband’s take on this?”
“He claims he has no idea.”
“Do you buy it?”
I didn’t answer.
She watched me for a while, then sighed.
“Fine. Get some rest. Let the infirmary look at your hand. And about the jade bracelet…”
“It’s broken.”
Dr. Helen’s expression darkened.
She knew the history of that pendant. Every veteran of the facility did.
“Broken?”
“She smashed it.”
Dr. Helen set her cup down and sat in silence for a long time.
“Eleanor, you don’t have to press charges if you don’t want to. But if you change your mind, you tell me.”
She stood up, walked to the door, and turned back to add one last thing.
“People like your parents? They didn’t make the sacrifices they did for nothing. Anyone who bullies their daughter… they’re going to have to deal with me first.”
