Chapter 4
“Nature of the work,” I said. “It’s not convenient to discuss.”
Amber put on a look of forced understanding. “That’s okay. No need to talk about it if you can’t. Let’s just be happy we’re all here together.”
Just then, a middle-aged man pushed through the crowd, wearing dress pants, leather shoes, and
slicked-back hair.
Mr. Albright, our old high school teacher.
“Amber,” he said, his voice booming with a wide, greasy smile. “I always said you were special. Look at you now, married to such a distinguished husband.”
Amber replied politely, “You’re too kind, Mr. Albright.”
Mr. Albright patted her shoulder. “I remember your grades weren’t exactly top-tier, but I knew back then you were destined for good fortune. Who cares about grades when you’re this successful?”
He finished, then shifted his gaze toward me, his expression cooling instantly.
“Eleanor’s here, too.”
The tone was noticeably colder.
“I am.” I replied.
Mr. Albright gave a dismissive “hmpf” and turned his face back toward Amber.
The meaning was clear.
In his eyes, the former top student in the school couldn’t hold a candle to the “underachiever” who married
into wealth.
Amber kept smiling, but I noticed her eyes kept flicking toward the spot behind me.
More specifically, they were fixed on my car parked at the side of the road.
Finally, someone else noticed it, too.
It was Noah who called it out.
“Eleanor, whose car is that?”
Everyone turned to follow his finger.

The black sedan was parked at the mouth of the lane, its frame boxy and rugged, the paint catching the
light.

Compared to the glitzy luxury rides festooned with “Just Married” floral arrangements, this car felt
completely out of place.
It wasn’t about ostentatious luxury. It radiated an aura of raw, heavy power.
Stacy stepped closer, glanced at the license plate, and rolled her eyes at the group.
“What is that? A junker? Who is she trying to impress?”
The group erupted in laughter.
“Seriously. I thought it was something high-end. That’s it?”
“Ten years in the workforce and that’s all she’s got? My car is better than that.”
Cristin squinted, then frowned. “Wait. Look at the plates.”
The crowd leaned in to get a closer look.
“The plate number… is it all zeros?”
“That’s not a standard series. You can’t just buy a plate like that.”
Stacy snorted. “It’s a fake plate, obviously. Someone working in a dump like hers couldn’t possibly get their hands on a plate like that.”
“Typical. Driving a beat-up car with a fake vanity plate just to save face? Have some shame.”
The laughter swelled again.
I didn’t say a word.
Suddenly, Amber stepped out of the crowd and walked straight toward me, her pace hurried, her gown
nearly tripping her up.
She stopped right in front of me and swung her hand.
Slap.
The sound was sharp and resonant.
The laughter in the lane stopped dead.
It wasn’t just the shock of the assault. It was how cleanly and decisively she’d struck.
“Amber, what is your problem?” I asked, turning my face away.
Amber’s chest heaved.

“Do you take me for an idiot?”
“That car is my husband’s!”
“I knew Pierce had someone on the side, but I never expected it to be you, Eleanor. You absolute bitch!”
