Chapter 3
The photo showed Buddy, the dog Alexander and I had raised for five years.
He had been skinned alive, left lying in a pool of his own blood, barely clinging to life.
Scattered around him were the chew toy and the little leather ball I’d just bought for him days ago.
My vision went dark. I could barely stay on my feet.
My hands were trembling uncontrollably as I shoved past the nurses and ran out of the hospital.
I tried to call Alexander, but before I could press the dial button, I heard people whispering nearby.
“That’s her, right? Looks innocent enough, but damn, who knew she was such trash?”
“Guess those thugs really had their fun. She probably asked for it.”
“Serves her right. Girls like that only have themselves to blame.”
I lifted my head in confusion and froze.
Across the street, on the giant LED screen in front of the hospital plaza, a video was playing.
It was me, trapped in that alley, my clothes being torn apart by those men as they took turns violating me.
Every filthy second was magnified on the massive screen, exposed under the harsh light of day for everyone
to see.
A sharp blast of a car horn split the air as a speeding sports car swerved out of control and charged straight
toward me.
I barely dodged it, stumbled, and fell hard to the ground. My side scraped against the pavement, burning like
fire.
The driver stuck his head out the window and spat at me.
“Watch where the hell you’re going! If you wanna die, don’t do it in the middle of the damn street!”
“Figures-you look like the type. No shame, no decency, and now you’re screwing up traffic too!”
I pressed my colorless lips together, deaf to the insults around me.
Just as I pushed myself up, dizzy and shaking, a motorcycle came barreling straight at me.
The impact sent me crashing back to the ground.

Pain shot through my abdomen as my wound tore open again, blood soaking through my clothes, warm and sticky.
Through the haze, I saw the biker stop, circle back, and crouch beside me.
He leaned close, his breath foul against my ear, and whispered with a mocking grin.
“Miss Collins wanted me to ask-how did it feel, being put on display like that?”
“Oh, and your dog…” He chuckled. “Soft fur. Didn’t last long, though.”
It was then that I finally recognized him-the leader of those thugs from the alley.
My body convulsed violently. The taste of blood filled my throat.
The next second, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
The screen lit up with one word: Mom.
I answered.
Mrs. Shaw’s voice was trembling and hysterical.
“Eleanor! What did you do?!”
“The company’s suddenly under investigation. All our partners pulled their investments at the same time. Our
entire cash flow has collapsed.”
“The banks are calling in the loans… The Shaw family is finished. We’re bankrupt!”
“Was it you? Did you do something to upset Alexander? Please, go talk to him. Beg him if you have to. Just
apologize!”
As I listened to my mother’s desperate sobs through the phone, a metallic taste rose in my throat.
A metallic taste flooded my mouth. I choked, and blood poured out between my lips.
