Chapter 6

The day I arrived in the Lycan Realm, a light rain was falling.

The station was crowded. As I pulled my suitcase through the exit, its wheels rolled over the rain-soaked

pavement with a soft, rhythmic sound.

I had come to a place where everything was unfamiliar.

No one was there to pick me up. No one stood in the crowd calling my name.

Strangely enough, I wasn’t sad at all.

For years, all I had done was wait.

I waited for my parents to look back at me. I waited for Hunter to praise me just once.

I waited for Aaron to remember that he had once promised he’d be waiting for me too.

But in the end, I realized something.

The moment I stopped waiting, I felt free.

As soon as I turned on my phone, the screen flooded with missed calls.

Mom, Dad. Hunter. Aaron.

I stared at them for a long moment, my finger hovering over the screen.

In the past, I would have called back immediately, even knowing I’d most likely be met with criticism.

But this time, I simply cleared every notification and switched my phone back to silent mode.

A junior from Highfang Academy was waiting outside the station, holding a sign that read New Student

Reception.

The moment she saw me, she walked over with a bright smile.

“Jenna Benson?”

“The Headmaster specifically told us you’d be arriving alone, so he asked us to take good care of you.”

I froze for a moment.

It had been a long time since anyone had said they wanted to take care of me.

Looking down at my suitcase, I quietly replied, “Thank you.”

During enrollment, the staff member handling my paperwork lit up the moment she saw my name.

“You’re Jenna Benson?”

“You’re the first SSS-Rank werewolf ever admitted to a Lycan academy. The school has already approved a freshman scholarship for you.”

“And if you ever run into financial difficulties, you can also apply for on-campus work opportunities.”

My hand paused over the form “A scholarship?”

She smiled and nodded.

“That’s right. You don’t need to worry too much about expenses. Just focus on your studies and your training.”

Just focus on your studies and your training.

The words echoed in my ears, leaving me momentarily dazed.

Back in that shabby apartment, every day had revolved around money.

Rent. Food. Bus fare. I hadn’t dared to repair the broken air conditioner.

I hadn’t dared to see a doctor when I got sick.

Even treating myself to a decent meal had required endless hesitation.

But now… someone was telling me that I could simply focus on studying and training.

I lowered my head and finished writing the last line on the form.

When I arrived at the dormitory, two of my roommates had already moved in.

One was making her bed. The other was kneeling on the floor, unpacking her luggage.

They both looked up and smiled, “Hi! Are you in this room too?”

I nodded, “Yeah. I’m Jenna Benson, from the Greenwood Pack.”

They introduced themselves with warm smiles.

No one asked why my family hadn’t come with me.

No one asked why I had only brought a single suitcase.

They simply helped me lift my luggage onto the top bunk before handing me a pack of tissues.

“It just rained. Here, dry yourself off.”

I accepted the tissues, my fingers tightening slightly around the package.

The dorm’s air conditioning was cool and comfortable.

It wasn’t like the old unit in my apartment that rattled endlessly while blowing nothing but hot air.

This cool breeze was quiet. Clean. Comforting.

Sitting on the edge of my bed, I thought back to those scorching months before the entrance exam.

Back then, I had kept telling myself to hold on just a little longer.

Everything would get better once the exams were over.

But standing in the cool air now, I finally understood.

Enduring never made things better.

Finishing the rank assessment never would have changed anything either.

The only thing that changed my life….was choosing to leave.

By the time I walked back to the dorm after dinner, the rain had stopped.

The night breeze in the Lycan Realm carried a faint salty scent.

Streetlights flickered on one by one, their reflections shimmering across the rain-damp streets.

My phone vibrated again. It was a friend request from Aaron.

The message attached to it read: [Jenna, where are you?]

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I tapped Decline.

As the screen went dark, I lifted my eyes and looked ahead.

The Lycan Realm was still unfamiliar.

But I knew that, starting today, my new life had finally begun.
