Chapter 47
Care about the Langdon family?
In a certain sense, she did care quite a lot.
Except what she cared about was exactly when they would go bankrupt, and exactly when Caleb would lose absolutely everything.
Obviously, Nova couldn’t voice those dark thoughts out loud. She feigned confusion and asked, “Why would you say that?”
Alaric remained silent for a long moment before finally asking, “Do you care about the family or do you care about Caleb?”
Seeing the deadly serious look in Alaric’s eyes, Nova couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“I don’t care about their family, and I certainly don’t care about Caleb. The only thing I care about is making sure my family doesn’t get dragged down or scammed out of our money. Don’t worry, I know how terribly they treated you in the past. I could never pity them. Alaric, I am always going to be on your side.”
Hearing her words, Alaric froze. It took him a long while to fully process what she had just said.
“You’re always… on my side?”
“Of course.”
Looking at her earnest expression, Alaric pressed further. “Then what about Caleb?”
“What does he have to do with me?”
“You used to… like him a lot.”
In the past, the entire school knew Nova was infatuated with Caleb. It was only after she fell into the water that she entirely changed.
Everyone assumed she had backed off out of sheer jealousy over his closeness with Sylvie, intentionally keeping her distance and even using him-the illegitimate Langdon son-as a convenient stand-in.
Even Alaric himself had believed that.
Seeing Alaric’s hesitation, Nova said softly, “Like you said, that was in the past. People have to look forward. I liked him once, but I don’t anymore.”
“Then who do you like now?”
Nova looked at him sincerely. “I like my family, and I like myself.”

Just as Alaric lowered his gaze, Nova stepped closer, gently taking his hand. “And of course, you’re my family too.”
With that single sentence, Alaric’s heart violently skipped a beat.
Family?
But he… didn’t want to just be her family.
Meanwhile, back at The Crestwood Villa.
Sylvie was left entirely alone to clean up the mess. Not only had all her classmates ditched her by the afternoon, but Caleb’s complete failure to show up had utterly humiliated her in front of everyone.
Even Tina had made up an excuse and left by nightfall.
The more Sylvie thought about it, the more furious and wronged she felt. She pulled out her phone and stubbornly dialed Caleb’s number again.
Unlike the previous attempts, this time, Caleb actually picked up.
“Sylvie…”
Completely ignoring the sheer exhaustion in his voice, Sylvie snapped angrily, “Caleb Langdon! You ignored my calls all day long. Where the hell were you? Do you have any idea how much you humiliated me in front of my friends? If you don’t give me a damn good explanation right now, we are done!”
Ever since they started dating, Sylvie had constantly used the threat of a breakup as leverage. It always worked flawlessly on him. Every time she threw a tantrum and threatened to leave, Caleb would patiently coax her back.
But this time, the line remained dead silent.
Sylvie’s heart suddenly dropped. Realizing she might have pushed too far, she immediately reined in her temper and softened her voice. “Caleb… I’m sorry. I was just really upset. I don’t actually want to break up. Are you okay?”
A long, suffocating silence stretched over the phone before Caleb’s bone-tired voice finally came through.
“Sylvie, let’s just take a break for a few days.”
