I knew who it would be before the door opened. The elders never arrived unannounced unless
it was something they believed urgent-or something they believed they couldn’t control. I was in no mood for either. I leaned into the throne, resting my arms against the armrest and
watching silently as the four of them entered the room.
Three men with silver dusting their temples and pride stiffening their backs, and one woman,
her eyes sharper than her voice would ever be. I kept my face expressionless, giving them a
cool, level headed look. Everything about them screamed tradition and authority, but I
remained seated. “I assume this isn’t a social visit,” I said, curling my fingers beneath my
chin.
“It’s time,” Elder Braem said, speaking first as always.
My jaws clenched before I forcefully relaxed them. I had an idea what he was talking about-
what they were here for-but I played dumb. I’d been secretly dreading this visit for so long.
To their credit, they had been lenient enough with this particular issue. I furrowed my
eyebrows, staring at the tall man. “Time for what?
Irritation flashed across his face before he quickly masked it. The elders always did their best
to look like they were emotionless creatures. In their head, they were setting a good example
for Lycan King’s in the province. More than that, they were also convinced it passed a silent
message that they wouldn’t go against the rules of their duty no matter how much anyone
begged and pleaded.
Most of the time, they were right.
Pleading with the elders was like trying to grow seeds on a rock. Elder Rowan took a deep
breath, stepping in. “The kingdom has waited long enough. You must choose a mate, and
soon. The Lycan throne requires a queen.” There it was. The announcement I’d been waiting

for. I could’ve laughed. Instead, I studied their faces. Searching. Wondering if I should say it,
whether or not to tell them I had already met my mate.

That the mate bond had snapped into place like the crack of a whip…for an Omega. I
wondered what their reaction would be. They’d been the one to deliver the prophecy on the
day I’d officially taken my place as King. ‘Only a queen strong enough…’ Funny how the moon
goddess had just sent her to me as my fated mate. No, I had to put in the extra work to find
her. If I told them about Sienna…
What exactly would they do with that truth?
Normally they were supposed to demand for her blood to be tested, her lineage proven, her
strength weighed and measured. But as an Omega, there would be no need for that. They
would agree I’d done the right thing. An Omega wasn’t strong enough to be queen, definitely
not strong enough to be the one the prophecy had spoken about. So, I didn’t say a word.
“How soon can we expect a decision?” Elder Cecelia asked, her expression unreadable. I’d
always wonder how she’d made it to the council. She definitely looked like the type who could
hold her own, but still. Being an elder meant you had to be out of touch with your emotions to
some extent. It wasn’t something most females perfected very well.
How soon could they expect a decision?
“I wish that was a question I can answer, but unfortunately, it isn’t,” I replied, voice low but
firm. “My focus is where it should be-on the prophecy. On the war that’s supposedly coming.
We need warriors, not a queen chosen for show.” I had always wondered how a queen would
save a kingdom that my warriors and I wouldn’t be able to. The elders fell silent at my words,
and then Elder Vaughn stepped forward.
He was the Eldest of them all, and hardly spoke unless he absolutely needed to. “I suggest you
take the time to think about it. We shall return in a couple of weeks,” He stated firmly, leaving
no room for arguments. “Hopefully by then, you would have understood the gravity of the
situation and remembered what your duty is as King.” My hands curled into fists as they took

a subtle bow and began leaving.

It was so like him to throw in a reminder of what my duty was, like it wasn’t something I
didn’t already think about. I sat quietly for a few minutes after their departure, reigning in my
anger. The doors opened minutes later and Kael walked in. I knew he could take a guess as to
why the elders had visited. The tone of his voice was low and calm. “I know you might not
want to hear this right now, but-“.
“But nothing.” I interrupted. “I would prefer that you kept it to yourself.”
He took a step forward. “But the pack-”
“I don’t give a damn what the pack whispers,” I snapped, rising to my feet. The temperature in
the room dropped a degree. “I didn’t become King by following the wishes of the pack.” The
room fell into a tense silence. “If the pack does not trust me enough to have faith in my
decision, then maybe it is time they found another King.” He didn’t say a word after that. Just
gave a bow and exited the room.
I paced around the room, my anger heightening. No one was talking about the fact that I’d
sent my mate away because she wasn’t fit enough for the role as Queen. No, they were more
interested in the other things I hadn’t done. I walked to the throne and lowered myself down
on it, gathering my thoughts.
Let them whisper.
I’d turned my mate away for their sake, all in a bid to be mated to the strong Queen the
prophecy had spoken of. If they thought I was in any hurry to make that decision…
Then they had another thing coming.
