The cold air bit into my skin. It was a struggle putting one leg in front of the other, my body
screaming for rest, for warmth. For something other than the dull, aching emptiness inside
- I didn’t know how long I had been walking. Days blurred together, stretching endlessly as
I wandered with no destination, no purpose. My wolf was silent. No, not just silent.
Temporarily gone.
Rejecting me would have been one thing. But sending me away after marking me, without
looking me in the eye even once? It was torture. I couldn’t blame her for tapping out. A
hollow, gaping void had taken her place, leaving me to stumble blindly forward, weaker than I
had ever been. The mate bond we’d formed had almost severed because of Logan’s actions, and
now my wolf had abandoned me too.
Maybe she was smarter than I was.
Maybe she had known I had nowhere left to belong.
A bitter gust of wind swept through the trees, and my knees buckled. I hit the ground hard,
the sharp sting barely registering through the numbness. I tried to move, to force my arms to
push me up, but it was no use. My powers had been tampered down to. There was nothing a
compromised mate bond didn’t do to a wolf. My feelings were all over the place. Right now, I
felt hurt, but I couldn’t wait for the time I would feel anger.
Logan had acted like a coward, and I hoped he realized it sooner or later.
My vision swam, The world tilted. I stretched an armpit helplessly, my fingers digging into the
death. Was I still struggling to live? Of what use was my life anymore? Perhaps this would
finally be the end of my misery. And if that were the case, then I was more than happy to
easily give in.

Chapter 9
A second later, the darkness dragged me under.
***
My senses awakened one after the other.

The scent of herbs and aged wood drifted through my nostrils-calming, but unfamiliar. My
body ached, but at least the biting cold was gone, replaced by something thick and heavy
wrapped around me. A blanket. I was definitely no longer in the woods. I turned my head to
the side, blinking against the dim glow of the light bulb. I pushed myself, trying to sit up, but
a firm hand pressed against my shoulder.
“Easy, my dear,” a voice murmured.
I turned my head slowly, my limbs sluggish, my thoughts swimming through fog. An elderly
woman sat beside me, her silver hair braided over one shoulder. Her eyes studied me with
quiet understanding-like she already knew the things I was dealing with before I’d even
spoken. “You’re safe now,” she said softly. “You collapsed near the border. It’s a good thing I
found you when I did.”
Border?
A splitting ache pierced my skull as I tried to recall the last few days. Everything was muddled
together-endless walking, hunger gnawing at my stomach, exhaustion clawing at my bones.
Nothing really stood out in my memories. Except that night with him. Logan’s hands on me.
His voice in my ear. The sharp bite of his teeth marking me as his-only for him to throw me
away the next morning.
My fingers curled into the fabric of the blanket. I forced my voice out, rough and quiet. “Thank
you for helping me out,” I expressed almost inaudibly. “I can’t imagine what would have
happened if I’d been discovered by the wrong people,” We both knew by wrong people I meant
the deranged rogues that moved around in the woods. How I’d even managed to survive for so
long out there-twice-might as well be a miracle.

The woman waved her hand in the air, casually dismissing my thanks. “I’m Mara,” she
introduced, watching me closely. I blinked at her. “And you? Do you identify with any pack?”
Her question sent a pang through my chest. I knew what she was really asking. If I had family,
a home. If I had people who would come looking for me. Again, my fingers tightened around
the blanket.
Images flickered in my mind-the pack I had run from, the whispers when they had seen what
I could do. And then Logan’s pack. The way they had stared and talked as the warriors led me
away. Had I ever truly ever belonged anywhere? I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “I’m
Sienna,” I introduced back. “And no, I don’t identify with any pack,” I added on a murmur.
Mara didn’t react right away. She simply studied me for a long moment, her expression
unreadable.
Then, she nodded.
“Well, no pack means no obligation,” she said casually as she walked to the small table in the
room. “You can stay here as long as you like.”
Wait, what? I blinked at her. “Just like that?”
She picked up the flask on the table, pouring some unknown liquid into a cup. “Just like that.”
She echoed. She turned, chuckling at the look on my face. “I’m pretty good at knowing when
someone needs a place to rest. Let’s just say…I’ve been through my own hell.” I might have
been curious if I didn’t have my own hell to think about. She walked over, placing a steaming
cup in my hands. “Drink. It’ll help.”
The warmth seeped through my fingers, and I almost immediately felt a little better. I
hesitated for a second, but exhaustion won over hesitation, and I lifted the cup to my lips. The
liquid was a little bitter, a herbal mixture of some kind. Mara nodded approvingly. “Get some
sleep. We can talk when you wake up.” I barely managed a nod before my eyelids grew too
heavy to hold open, my body melting back into the soft mattress.
For the second time in forty eight hours, I let myself sink into darkness without fighting it.
