The Lucan Marked Me - Chapter (11)

Chapter 11
Sienna
Mara was hiding something from me.
She’d been nice to me and all, and we’d bonded quite well over the last few days. She gave me
space when I needed it, and guidance when I didn’t ask for it. At first, I’d decided that once I
recovered fully, I would immediately be on my way. But it hadn’t taken long for reality to hit
- I had nowhere to go.
Since she’d insisted, I’d decided to stay with her for a while, just until I figured myself out at
least. I’d been so happy when she hadn’t asked about my past, hadn’t pushed and tried to find
out why I’d been on my own in the woods in the first place. I had to admit I’d been unsettled
by her kindness at first. But I’d quickly realized that was just how she was. She was kind to
everyone she crossed paths with, the type of kindness you knew came from a place of
empathy.
Things had been going quite smoothly, but naturally, the longer I stayed here, the more
questions I had to ask. Like why she lived away from the rest of the pack for example. She
wasn’t an Omega, and wasn’t living in a shack. In fact, her house was quite cozy. It was a small
cabin situated a few miles away from the rest of the pack members. At first I’d thought she
just loved the isolation, but there were times it seemed as though she was trying to protect
herself from something.
She was always very conscious about locking the doors, and laying low. As curious as I was, I
kept my questions to myself. She hadn’t bugged me about my former pack. Common sense
required I did the same. Since we were staying together, it was practically impossible for her
to hide her job from me. She was a tarot reader-a very successful one at that.
She had a small tarot shop at the center of the pack, and she worked every day of the week.
Tarot reading wasn’t a completely strange thing. What was strange was the amount of wolves

tag visited her tarot shop. I had never actually followed her to the pack center-I hardly
stepped out of the cabin-but I knew from how tired she was whenever she returned that she
had a lot of customers at the shop.
Which was something I didn’t understand. Oftentimes we visited tarot shops to feed our own
delusion and nothing else. But a steady stream of customers? There had to be something else
she was doing. Not that it was any of my business. I took the time to practice with my powers.
I didn’t want to accidentally lose control and land Mara in trouble, especially since I haven’t
opened up to her about them in the first place.
I waved my fingers in the air, trying to concentrate on the dead flowers in the vase. Mara had
asked me to take them out and replace them with fresh flowers, but I reasoned that I could
just bring them back to life instead. There was a small glow that began around my fingers and
travelled to the flowers. Its petal danced lightly and the stem made an attempt at rising but it
quickly fell back.
I blew a frustrated huff of air from my mouth.
Suddenly, the glow around the flowers came back-even stronger. I watched in confusion as
the stem grew upright and the leaves became bigger and greener. I stared down at my fingers
but there was no glow around them. I traced the line of the glow from the flowers, and my
heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. How had I not heard her?
Mara was standing a few feet behind me, her fingers waving in the air. There was a glow
around her fingers-a glow that travelled to the flowers. Her attention was directed at the
vase, but I knew she was well aware of my gaze burning into the side of her face. The room
filled with a terse silence as the glow slowly faded. Still, she didn’t turn to look at me. She
closed the door of the cabin, walking to drop the groceries she’d picked up in the kitchen.
I kept my attention fixed on her, waiting for her to break the silence. “I’ve been waiting for
you to open up about your powers,” She said quietly, standing with her back to me. I stared as
she released a deep exhale before spinning around to face me, her eyes immediately locking
unto mine. “I could tell when I saw you lying unconscious by the pack’s border that you were

one of us,” She continued quietly.
“One of us?” I echoed, my throat feeling scratchy.
I didn’t know what to think.

I’d been living with her for a couple of days now, and the fact that I hadn’t so much as
suspected she had powers like I did, honestly frightened me a little. Had she done a perfect
job hiding them? Or had I simply been too trusting? “Yes, Sienna,” She confirmed. She
squinted her eyes at me. “I had a feeling you didn’t want to acknowledge your powers-even to
yourself-so I didn’t bother bringing it up.” She tilted her head. “Or had I read that wrongly?”
She pressed lightly.
I shook my head.
No, she hadn’t read it wrongly at all. I wasn’t ready to acknowledge my powers. But it would
have made a difference if she had disclosed she was also like me. Then again, I was living
rather comfortably under her roof and I hadn’t told her more than she needed to know. I knew
she was following my train of thought when she sighed, her shoulders dropping for only a
second before she began taking out the vegetables she’d brought home.
“Don’t beat yourself up about it Sienna,” She stated calmly. “I’m here. Whenever you’re ready
to talk about it, you just let me know..” Her gaze dropped meaningfully to my hands. “For
now, just try to be extremely conscious of your surroundings whenever you’re using your
powers.” I listened quietly, letting her words register in my head.
I was definitely not about to make the same mistake twice.
